young adults

I never read young adult novels, but I think I'm going to start.  I was always busy trying to be really a big intellectual, reading John Ashbery at like 14 because I heard him read a poem on NPR (what?  As if I could understand one goddamn stanza back then?  I could hardly handle putting in a tampon).  When I was 9, I took a titanic leather bound ( Read more... )

the only young adult stuff i remember reading was daniel pinkwater, who i recommend. me and SA recently reread one of his books (snarkout boys) together. his main theme is fat bespectacled weirdos who are not only smarter than everyone around them but frustrated by their abject stupidity. he also advocates sneaking out of your house late at night, roaming around the city, and smoking cigars. it's definitely silly, but what isn't?

I don't think I read a great amount of young adult novels as a young adult (ahem, what are the age limits for "young adult" anyway?) either. In sixth grade I tried reading Manhattan Transfer, which is really funny because I'm reading Big Money right now and still struggling with those news reals. Shit.
Anyway, I was probably similar to you, except to much less of an extreme. I was more influenced by my siblings who were seniors in high school when I was still in elementary/middle school so the things I read/listened to were still way beyond me.
But, as skopparakringla said, Roald Dahl is really fantastic. And The Little Prince, though that's more of a children's book that I think isn't intended for children, but that's all I got.
