As far as writing music goes, there's a program you can get online that you might find useful, called Melody Assistant from http://www.myriad-online.com/en/index.htm. I played around with it several years ago and made a creditable effort at writing a tune that was running through my head at the time, despite knowing jack-shit about music (at the time, I could only figure out what a note was on a piece of sheet music because someone had once pointed out to me where "A" was, and I could count from there).

The free version of Melody Assistant doesn't let you change keys or print, but they also have a program called Harmony Assistant (their higher end product) that does everything but won't let you save, so if you use both you could do whatever you wanted without paying. Or you can save a lot of bother and pay some money. But this is probably much more information than you possibly wanted to know.

"who you know".
Don't limit yourself to your parents. I've been told that the real purpose of Mac schooling is so that a Mac alum will hire me once I graduate...the same may be true of Willamette.

so, yeah, talk to your teachers, the people at your church, the people you meet in Chicago.

because I think I just got an in for a special-needs-care job in Japan from ONE OF THE MONKS. Um, yeah.
