I don't want to be facetious, but I can't help remarking about, the stereotype, how guys' hearts are crushed when girls "just want to be friends."

You've probably told him already, so this comment doesn't mean anything, but he seems to be completely in the dumps, and you telling him this could be more harmful and hurtful.

I know you have to do this and I'm not stopping you, but he's really going to need someone to lean on when you do tell him. And you being his best friend...well, I'll just leave it at that.
