My house is damp to begin with, and over the summer when we weren't there the landlord was supposed to do some building work on it. We put the sofas under dust sheets to protect them. The landlord however didn't actually do any work, but did leave the cellar door open so a nice cold and damp draft was constantly blowing through the house - this combined with the fact that the furniture was covered and so moisture couldn't escape meant that things went like that. At first they tried to say it was our fault for putting dust sheets over things, but if we hadn't the furniture would have been destroyed by anyway, so it was like we couldn't win. Landlords are a nightmare.

The funny thing is that my sofas are sort of that colour already, so how am I supposed to know if they're mouldy?!
