Day 6: Whatever Tickles Your Fancy

Let's talk a bit about Girl in the Fireplace.

Was I the only one who went away from that episode horribly confused? In the midst of that hype the Doctor had with Reinette, I found myself defending him because of the threat looming over her. He wouldn't just leave anyone if he could possibly fix the problem. But it ( Read more... )

LOL omg GITF is such a hot-button issue in Doctor/Rose fandom even after all this time. I think the problem with GITF is that it just doesn't make sense where it is in the continuity -- immediately after School Reunion, before the Cybermen episodes, in the midst of s2 ... it doesn't fit. If it'd been in, say, s3, I would've had a much easier time buying it (SORRY MARTHA ILU) because I can imagine him ditching Martha to snog a hot blonde, lol. I've always assumed that the TARDIS would take Mickey and Rose home if they'd waited in it (rather than on the spaceship), so I've never seen it *quite* as "ABANDONING THEM TO DIE!!" the way some of the fandom treats it, but I guess that's an assumption on my part and it's not clarified by the text. I also just... don't usually get sucked into romances that come and go within 40 minutes, so Ten/Reinette would leave me cold even if I wasn't busy being butthurt about Ten/Rose, lol ( ... )

...What the hell, I didn't even know Moff wrote that episode. I THINK THAT JUST CLEARED UP MY WHOLE PROBLEM.

I've noticed that there's still issues with that episode. One of the reasons it confused me so much was, in fact, where it sat in the season like you said. Seemed out of nowhere, plunked in the middle to cause unnecessary problems. But, seriously, now that I know Moffat wrote that episode I'm perfectly fine. No more questions. LOL

I never thought that either. I just assumed the Doctor would find his way back in the end because, hello, he wouldn't just leave a couple people--Rose--on some abandoned spaceship. Plus I always wondered why Rose and Mickey didn't just wait in the TARDIS where it would obviously be safer, but whatever. Or was it because it was locked...? Can't remember that detail. XD ( ... )

LOL LOL IT EXPLAINS IT ALL, DOESN'T IT?

Rose would have a key, so the TARDIS wouldn't be locked. I guess I just by-default assumed it'd be an emergency programme thing -- which I think is backed up by the way in the library episodes, Ten's plan is basically "ditch Donna in the TARDIS and it will take her home if I die" (which... nice plan, Doctor).

I just assumed the Doctor would find his way back in the end because, hello, he wouldn't just leave a couple people--Rose--on some abandoned spaceship.

I think people's problem is that, according to the episode, as far as he knows he's stuck there. Of course in the middle of s2 he's not going to lose the TARDIS and his companions -- but people get very mad at the Doctor for this episode, lol.

This is why it's a good thing Tennant left and Moff didn't get a hold of RTDs characters, and he got to go play with his own. Good Lord. LOLIA. I am happy to watch Moffat write his own Doctor and his own companion and even his own romance if that really is what Doctor/River is going to be, but if ( ... )

Yeah, that's what I thought. Duh, she had a key... I don't remember her doing much to try and get him back or anything either. Ugh. Should just watch the ep again and shake my fist while saying "MOFF!!!" Might help. BUT maybe Rose didn't want to stay in the TARDIS because she'd already been carted home against her will once. So she skillfully avoided that "Not this shit again" moment.

but people get very mad at the Doctor for this episode
Logic doesn't win in fandoms. XD I find that funny, actually, because it's not like he'd never gotten himself unstuck from somewhere before. I can't remember actually being mad at him, but I remember that my defending him steadily turned sour as it went. lol

I am happy to watch Moffat write his own Doctor and his own companionOh yeah. I love Eleven and the story building around him. But there's no way Moff could have continued Ten's simply because Moff can't seem to wrap the story with a strong emotional undertone like RTD did. I respect both writers in their different styles, but in the end it's ( ... )

...*tries to stop heart from racing* THAT. WAS. NOT COOL. That GIF is EVIL! (I have to go send it to a friend now...)

I had something interesting and discussion worthy to say about GitF but now I've forgotten it after having a heart attack... I'll get back to you if I remember.

Haha, that's ok. Rant away!

Pretty much, I agree with all of this.

At first I didn't interpret the Doctor as really "falling in love" with Reinette so much as being a fan, and then doing what he does best to preserve the timelines.
Exactly. That's what I kept telling myself, but as the episode went on, I was less like "He's just saving someone and things are screwing up as normal" and more "Ok, what the hell, Doctor?"

It's an interesting change in GITF from what we'd seen in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, even if the flirtations between Jack and Rose were painfully obvious. There was a bit of Doctor/Rose mixed in there. Wonder if Moff meant to do that, or something. It'd be an interesting thing to find out since he's infamous for his Rose hatin'.

Since I'm lazy, here is what I have to say about GITF:

Though _thirty2flavors did help ease my hate by pointing out that the real problem is that GITF should have just happened in s3.

Mmmmm yep. That pretty much sums it up right there. Like I said, at a certain point I couldn't defend the Doctor's actions anymore because, honestly, what was there to defend? It's like the official bit of fan fiction character-bashing, if I'm going to be very blatant and mean about it (and, well, I am, so there).

Pretty sure the next time this episode is watched I'll imagine it in season 3. (Sorry Martha! Like you really want to go through something like this twice...)

Yeah. The thing about Ten is that, honestly, he is kind of a douceh bag a lot of the time. Even with Rose. But not this much.
