there was a piece on the radio today about how america and esp euroup  are very secular at the present time.  And I was wondering if there really was less religious leading then in the past.  Does anyone know if there were any great rulers and civs without religious backing?  Also I was wondering if since there was less religious leadership, if

Aside from the ostensibly atheist communist/fascist regimes of the 20th century, I can't think of any civilizations that didn't either (A) have tacit support from the dominant religion(s) of the day, or (B) claim to be acting in God's name. (Ours is somewhere between A and B.)
