Thanks for the link, Dan! It's a sad story, but a necessary one. It makes me think about how no one (except the poor soldier who have to be there) is willing to die for the values we hold dear. I mean - we accept all these curtailments of our civil liberties so we'll be "safe" - yet we've brought ourselves closer to this sort of mentality where might is right and the "other" is feared. I wonder if instead of being so afraid after 9/ll - we actually had leaders stand up and say - this is a great country - we need to change some of security habits -but we don't need to change our character and be suspicious of everyone who doesn't agree with us. What if freedom was seen as strength and not a weakness we have to "protect"?
People really do take what we have for granted and aren't willing to do much to make a difference in bettering things as long as they are comfortable. I have to include myself in that unfortunately--the disillusioned often become as apathetic as the complacent because they see change as being an impossibility, which in turn makes it one.
