Life through a lens

I've been told I should get some kind of Flickr or Photobucket account, and start posting some of my snapshots - and the occasional well-composed and interesting picture - online for the world to see.

It seems that there are several of them (and several online consumer comparisons, of varying degrees of reliability and credibility):
  1. Flickr

Flickr has always struck me as one of the least invasive ones.

I don't use ImageShack or Pinterest but I use the others like this:

Flickr is for my own photos, taken with my camera. It's a site with a high percentage of original content and the ability to CC licence my pictures is a very good thing.

Imgur is for re-hosting pictures to post on reddit or facebook. It's what it was made for (it was created and is maintained by a redditor).

Photobucket is terrible. Their layout, interface and intrusive javascript makes me want to run a mile.

I consider Flickr to be one with the long-term stability and the devoted userbase that may keep it alive long term.
I still suggest keeping your own copies of all your photos.

Does your email provider bundle in free webspace? You could host them yourself.

I'm a SmugMugger ... it's a paid hosting service, and I'm currently on the basic level, but I like the fact that the shots are in galleries, rather than a stream - it suits my compartmentalising brain. And I've not had any problems with it.

(If you do go with SmugMug and quote my account when signing up, I get a discount! Woo-hoo!)
