Sad news, yesterday, of Peter Firmin's passing.
For those of you who don't know British childrens' television he was the very, very English Jim Henson: one of the rare and precious adults who can truly play, and write, with the joy of a seven-year-old child.
He touched and enriched the lives of many, many people, who can now, - years later! - read to children with Oliver Postgate's avuncular tone of excitement, bringing love and wonder to the most ordinary things:
*Bagpuss gave a big yawn, and settled down to sleep
And of course when Bagpuss goes to sleep, all his friends go to sleep too:
The mice were ornaments on the mouse-organ;
Gabriel and Madeleine were just dolls;
And Professor Yaffle was a carved wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker"
"Even Bagpuss himself, once he was asleep, was just an old, saggy cloth cat:
Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams.
But Emily loved him"
