Going to play Devil's Advocate here.

Why do you solely blame the Bush administration? I blame these criminals in New Orleans that have no regard of human values - to loot, murder, and rape. How have these people concluded that criminal activities are the best way to embrace chaos? Is this truly the dark side of human nature? I'm appalled by these actions, but I do wonder how many good deeds get buried in the light of these sensational acts of crime ( ... )

it took 5 days for FEMA and other federal and national agencies to get aid there. the mayor of new orleans publicly asked for relief and help. bush cut federal funding to fortify the levees and dock systems down there, so after warnings that this kind of thing could happen in the early 90s and a multi billion dollar plan was put together by the government under clinton, and approved, it never got done and the money was cut by bush. cuba, russia, and europe have offered aid and oil and money; bush has turned it all down saying 'we can take care of our own.' really? there's been no evidence of that so far. there were no plans for this kind of disaster in place, even though there have been warnings for years that new orleans was at severe risk ( ... )

Guess the administration didn't bother with strategic thinking after all.

I read somewhere that New Orleans asked for federal aid two days after Louisiana and another state during/after the presence of Hurricane Katrina. I don't know how much truth that is, but from what little I've read, this apocalyptic scenario should be blamed on the failures on all levels of government. I agree with what you explained about the administration's failures as I've read articles corrobating your points. I've also read that failures can be attributed to the currently undermanned National Guard, which has obviously been tapped for the war in Iraq. The sad truth is that it generally takes monumental events outside the politicial realm to generate change in this country. Let's hope these fallacies can be thoroughly investigated.

Let me know if you find any other tidbits about this crisis.
