The next morning was filled with the scent of birthday cake and sake. Not exactly the perfect smell, but Nanao was more than satisfied. Who knew that everyone would care this much about her birthday. Everyone but him.

Wait. She stopped herself. Why was she worrying so much about Captain Kyouraku? She had a fine birthday with out him. But wait. She stopped herself again. What if something had happened to him? And why was Captain Ukitake so calm about everything the night before. Surely he would be worried about his companion as well.

The pieces just didn't seem to fit together. “Out of all the guests that showed up last night, at least Shunsu─” She stopped herself, hesitating for a brief moment. “Captain Kyouraku would have come. I mean I can barely get him to leave me alone.”

Here she was, worrying that she might actually have feelings for her Captain, who was always trying to make feeble attempts at making her his.

No.

She was determined not to let any of this get to her, so she began cleaning. The room was a mess. She went into the bathroom area and found Vice Captain Matsumoto passed out on the floor. “Matsumoto-san,” She said, giving Rangiku a slight nudge on her exposed shoulder, “I think you should get up. It's morning.”

After struggling with her for a few more minutes, she was out the door. “My oh my!” Nanao exclaimed, looking around at all the mess everywhere. For Gotei 13 members, everyone sure was messy. “It seems we lack self control. Especially that Renji from the 6th Division.”

A few hours passed by as the sun crept its way into her room, which was now spotless. If there was one thing Nanao was an expert at (besides work.. oh and Kidou), it was cleaning and organization. The room looked better than it had the night before, actually.

Just as she was about to take the trash bag out to the main hall, she felt a breeze and realized she had left the window open. She set the bag down and stepped over to the window to close it. Turning around to resume her work, she stood, stunned.

“C...Captain Kyouraku..”

“You didn't think I forgot, did you?” He was slightly blushing. Something seemed a bit odd about him. It was like he was... tame.

She contemplated for a second. If she were to let him know that she was worried or cared, things could go wrong. “Keep cool” she told herself.

“Forgot?” An unconvincing laugh escaped her lips. Hoping he didn't catch it, he continued. “Forgot about what?”

“You know what I'm referring to, Nanao-chan” Just then she noticed that his hands were behind his back. He was definitely holding something. The large, flowery haori that was draped over his back swayed back and forth as he took two strides toward her, now standing a foot away. “Happy birthday” he whispered, bringing his left hand forward, holding a book.

“What's this?” She asked, placing a hand on the book, hesitantly. This definitely wasn't like Shunsui at all. He was always trying to pressure her into sex by giving her roses and gifts she would rather not speak of. But this? A book? Was he just trying a new approach?

As she examined the book, which had a familiar scent that she couldn't quite place a finger on, she ran her fingers down the front cover, which was covered in maroon roses. In the center read the words “MY NANAO.”

“Just open it,” he suggested, still blushing. Now, a brighter shade of pink. “I know how you miss her. And you know, so do I. I made this for you to remember her... and for us. Our relationship. I've been cruel to you. Always pressuring you into sex, when all I really need is you. You complete me, Nanao. I don't know where I'd be without you.”

When she turned the front cover over, she saw, on the first page an old photograph of the ex-Vice Captain of the 8th Division, Yadomaru Lisa. She glanced up at Shunsui and would have sworn she saw a tear in his eye. This was not helping as she was fighting back tears herself.

“I've compiled a book, filled with pictures of all of us. You, her, me, and other people who have become a part of our lives. But now, I must go.” He said as he wrapped his arm around her body and gave her a soft, gentle kiss on the forehead. “There are matters to which I have to attend. Shame I couldn't get her to do them all for me.”

With that said, he strode out the door, leaving Nanao standing there alone, eyes filled with tears.
