Author's Notes: Written for my 100 Situations table featuring Shunsui and Juushiro of Bleach. Note: This is set in the past and both Shunsui and Juushiro are both in the 9th division. Shunsui is 7th seat and Juushiro is 9th seat. Shunsui has achieved shikai, while Juushiro hasn't.

The fire couldn't possibly have happened at a worse time. The two seated officers had just arrived in the Seireitei from their 4th mission together as members of the 9th division. It was no easy task either. They were to exterminate an infestation of hollows in the Rukongai 5th district. They succeeded, but not without scratches, bruises, and a few broken bones. Nothing a little rest and relaxations wouldn't cure.

"You're really getting the hang of that Shikai of yours Kyouraku." Shunsui could detect a sense of envy in his voice, so he reminded himself not to brag or boast.

"Yeah, I guess you could say that. We should work on your Zanpakutou training," shifting his weight, his face with an expression of pain as he lifted his ankle onto a pillow, "...just as soon as this leg heals."

Juushiro chuckled, blushing at the somewhat comedic tone Kyouraku often spoke in. "Don't worry. I'd like to do this on my own." He contemplated for a moment, knowing that Kyouraku wouldn't take no for an answer. "And besides, you have your ---"

"Wait! Do you smell that?" Kyouraku sniffed the air, an expression somewhere in between worry and suspicion plastered on his face. "It smells like fire!"

"We've got to get out of here Kyouraku!"

"Don't you think I know that, Juu. But how? Your arms broken, and so's my ankle."

"I think I might be able to carry you." Ukitake wasn't exactly the most confident, but if it meant saving his partner's life, he would muster up all the confidence in the world. He had to.

"I couldn't have you do that, and besides, we don't even know if we're in the fire's path." At that exact moment, he heard the exact thing he was dreading. Fire crackling. Juushiro gave him a look that he couldn't quite put his finger on. "So much for that theory. Let's get out of here." It took him a few moments, but he eventually managed to get up, albeit with help from the nearby wall.

"Are you sure you're alright to move? Here I'll help you." He grabbed Kyouraku's left arm and lifted it over his shoulder. He was by no means light. It took all of Ukitake's strength just to stand there, let alone walk. But he had to do it. There was no going back now.

"No Juu. I can handle it on my own. I'll make an attempt using Shunpo."

"B..but Shunsui, you know you aren't strong enough... even without a broken ankle!"

"Don't doubt me," a smirk was written on his face. How could he possibly be smiling at a time like this? "Besides, you have to get out of here too. Don't worry about me. You go!"

"B..but!"

"I said GO, Ukitake." It was rare for him to refer to him as Ukitake. And the expression on his face helped ease his worry no better. With one more glance, a tear in his eye, he ran off towards the exit.

Kyouraku had no time to waste. He had tried this several times before, all which led to unsuccessful attempts. But this time was different. He had no choice.

"OH THANK GOD!" Ukitake screamed, pushing through the rest of the division members to reach his comrade who was now lying on the ground in the middle of the courtyard. He wrapped his this arms around him and propped him up. "You made it!"

Tears immediately began pouring from his eyes, and this time he wasn't afraid to show it.

"What're you crying for, handsome?"
