Nathan was exhausted. Inner turmoil aside, his body was exhausted by staying inside so much just so he could keep his eyes on his mother for as long as possible. Anders had made his excuses and slipped away from Nathan and his mother on Saturday as soon as he could. To be honest, he'd doubted either of them had particularly noticed he was gone. Their bond had nothing at all to do with him, and (once he'd gotten over his awkwardness about the meeting) he understood that it shouldn't.

But now that radio told him the dead had left again ... there was at least something he could do. He went upstairs to tap on Nathan's door.

"Are you home?" he called, and waited for a response.

"No." The word was croaked out and he frowned at himself. "No one's here."

Obviously a lie but he was tired and a little out of sorts. A lot out of sorts.

Stunning how the dead coming back tended to lead to that kind of feeling.

"Well, at least the empty room answered," Anders said. "It would have been silly for me to stand here talking to a door."
