I have two main things to say about the latest Community episode:
1. THIS WAS SO AMAZING I'M STILL NOT SICK OF WATCHING IT
2. HOW AM I GOING TO SURVIVE THE INDEFINITE HIATUS BEFORE I SEE IT AGAIN????
(3. I love 'Teach Me How To Understand Christmas' gets better every time I see it.)
It's hard to express how much I loved this episode without basically re-enacting it.
Right from the start, the mocking of Glee is excellent. I love the early Christmas montage, and the way they got slammed by Jeff for copyright infringement. (AND THEN THE SHOW HAD ONLY ORIGINAL SONGS.)
Oh and by the way Abed basically wanting them all to get together and watch a fictional version of the Star Wars Holiday Special was pretty cool.
I love that it starts with Abed! And sucking other people in! And making use of Donald Glover's rapping! Then you've got the GLEE STYLE ACAPELLA BACKGROUND MUSIC. And the looks of horror when the study room is set up like the rehearsal room in Glee. "Good point. Sing about it?" It's my favourite ridiculous thing about Glee, put into my favourite show!
'Baby Boomer Santa', aside from being a plot to suck Pierce into the glee club, is a great musical version of what Community usually does with TV/movie pop culture references. I think my favourite part was Troy being Bob Dylan - and wearing one of those harmonica holders without doing anything else with his hands. Or, for that matter, playing the harmonica.
The way they sucked Shirley in really got me. I loved it despite how touchy it is, but it might just be the best ue of Shirley all year.
AND LET BRITTA SING HER HEART SONG. LET BRITTA SING HER AWKWARD SONG! (Even though she can clearly actually sing as seen at the end.)
Look, most of the best moments in Community are so beautifully constructed that trying to talk about them seems to diminish them. The moment at the end when Jeff says he's thinking of seeing a new shrink is one of my favourites for the whole episode, but it's tiny and funny and brilliant. Just like Troy's shock, which turns out to be about Inspector Spacetime.
There's not a lot of sense in this post, I'm sorry. I'm just full of joy about this episode and sadness that I don't even know how long it'll be before Community comes back again. That's all that I really need to EXPRESS to you all, you know?
Except that I do kind of need to talk about 'Teach He How To Understand Christmas' because it appeals to me on every single possible weird level. I appreciate Annie's boobs, and on first viewing I was mainly torn between the 'this is so sexist' and 'perfect Marilyn Monroe homage' reactions. But the more I watch it the more I love it as a deconstruction of the stupid sexpot song as a genre. And beyond that, there's the fact that Jeff doesn't even like it. The way he sits there with scantily-clad Annie singing and dancing all over him, and he just looks disappointed and confused and a little disgusted, and he even says "You're an intelligent woman, you don't need to do this", IT'S JUST PERFECT. It should be extraordinarily cheesy and hackneyed but they actually pulled it off and I loved it. It was my favourite song of the episode and after six viewings I'm not sick of it yet.
SERIOUSLY WHY IS IT GOING AWAY? WHAT AM I GOING TO DOOOOO?
