Happy day of whatever where you don't go to work

Oh all my money is on "somebody I used to know" this year - and then I will refuse to check into Facebook to avoid everyone talking about it :P

But I agree - its such an awkward public public holiday. I usually tend to avoid the big celebrations about it and stick to a radio party instead.

I plan to wail along to it alone in my flat after drinking some tea. (It might be tea with a nip of whisky.) And then go to sleep.

It's a strange holiday. I don't think I realised how strange until this year, because it's the first time since I was 14 that I haven't been working on Australia Day. There are so many events that I never knew about. But mostly I just like that it's a day when you can make time to hang out with your friends, but there's no pressure to go to any particular event. And that most of these hangouts will generally involve listening to Triple J.

After all this time, I should probably stop being surprised when Australian artists get recognised overseas, but still, I'm surprised and pleased that he's getting heard elsewhere. I listened to his first album and didn't like it so I resisted listening to this song for weeks after it came out, thinking it couldn't possibly be that good. And then it was that good. And then a football player dressed as Gotye (with the body paint I mean) for a finals party. And then I discovered that it's really funny if you listen to it while watching the video for 'Single Ladies'.

You go, Gotye!
