...Because she's too poor to live anywhere else. She doesn't have a job (yet); she basically lives off the crappy allowance the Porter gives everyone it drags in to the City. Also, she actually likes it there a little. It's tiny and kinda dirty, but she'll take tiny and kinda dirty over huge and antiseptic clean any day.

If not, then why didn't they and who did raise you?
Well, Chell had real parents (no she is not a clone despite worrying about it fuck you all), but her life "restarted" while she was in the Enrichment Center. Due to either deliberate meddling or a complication in the stasis technology while she was in the Relaxation Chamber, she lost all her memories. GLaDOS "raised" her in a way -- or, at least, that's how Chell sees it, making GLaDOS's later betrayal all the more painful and shocking.
The Rat Man, while never actually encountered in the game, left behind helpful graffiti and warnings about GLaDOS. It was "he" (true gender unknown) who actually planted the seeds of suspicion in Chell's mind in regards to GLaDOS, but they didn't really take root until she was already sliding into the firepit.

This was not a healthy relationship.
CHELL LOVED GLaDOS OKAY. She loved her like a loving thing and although she got a little suspicious and worried/crazy when it came to the Weighted Companion Cube and the Rat Man's warnings, but she kept going despite it all. When GLaDOS made the murder attempt, Chell finally realized that GLaDOS was never someone to be trusted, that She had intended to kill her all along, and so Chell kinda just went "fuck it" and went to go kill her robot not-mother and escape the facility. Except that didn't work, because GLaDOS is in the City and very much still an influence on Chell's life.

I have no idea how the Rat Man would describe Chell since they've never met. He'd probably write some crazy poetry on the wall or something, I guess.

Test Subject 042 (a chicken) and Test Subject 234 (a human). Subject 234 is probably not the Rat Man, though -- you only find out about him/her on a clipboard in one of the offices, and GLaDOS was ill-equipped to write on one of those back then.

So when you have gone through hell with something, put your life into its metaphorical hands time and time again, you come out of the experience trusting that thing like it's a person. It's not just a gun anymore, it's an extension of your self. It's like -- it's like Jayne and Vera, or the Doom Guy and his gun.
What would have to happen for you to end this relationship? Incineration. Except the portal gun remains operation in temperatures up to 4000 degrees Kelvin, so that's more of Chell's isue than the gun's.

Turrets, acid pools, high energy pellets that cause disintegration... it wasn't fun. She didn't have any attachment to the place -- only to GLaDOS. She didn't like how trapped she felt in the facility. It got better when she got the portal gun, since it gave the illusion that she was at least a little bit in control of her environment.
Chell needs to be able to fling herself around and run and hide and jump and fall and-- she needs space.
What, if anything, would it take for you to be able to overcome this? I have no clue. Therapy?
How do you react when this fear manifests itself? She will probably flip her shit, especially since pretty much the only way she could ever be put into such a position is if the portal gun was taken away from her, which opens up another bag full of crazy.

Can you kill? Yes.
When did you decide (or learn) that you could? Technically Test Chamber 16 (she considers the turrets to be alive), but it's really Chamber 17.
What happened and how did you handle it? Chell had to euthanize her faithful Weighted Companion Cube. She didn't want to and would have refused to continue on had GLaDOS not told her that the WCC would rather die in a fire than hinder her progress. Chell believed her and incinerated it.
She did not handle it very well. She was able to sorta compartmentalize her grief and keep going, but when Chell escaped to the broken down parts of the facility, she had a minor meltdown and resolved to kill GLaDOS -- partly because she thought that's what she would need to do to escape, but also for to get revenge for the Cube.

Actually, it's currently unknown, but I like to think Chell did extremely well on her tests.

Well, Chell had real parents (no she is not a clone despite worrying about it fuck you all), but her life "restarted" while she was in the Enrichment Center. Due to either deliberate meddling or a complication in the stasis technology while she was in the Relaxation Chamber, she lost all her memories. GLaDOS "raised" her in a way -- or, at least, that's how Chell sees it, making GLaDOS's later betrayal all the more painful and shocking.
The Rat Man, while never actually encountered in the game, left behind helpful graffiti and warnings about GLaDOS. It was "he" (true gender unknown) who actually planted the seeds of suspicion in Chell's mind in regards to GLaDOS, but they didn't really take root until she was already sliding into the firepit.

CHELL LOVED GLaDOS OKAY. She loved her like a loving thing and although she got a little suspicious and worried/crazy when it came to the Weighted Companion Cube and the Rat Man's warnings, but she kept going despite it all. When GLaDOS made the murder attempt, Chell finally realized that GLaDOS was never someone to be trusted, that She had intended to kill her all along, and so Chell kinda just went "fuck it" and went to go kill her robot not-mother and escape the facility. Except that didn't work, because GLaDOS is in the City and very much still an influence on Chell's life.

She didn't like how trapped she felt in the facility. It got better when she got the portal gun, since it gave the illusion that she was at least a little bit in control of her environment.

What happened and how did you handle it? Chell had to euthanize her faithful Weighted Companion Cube. She didn't want to and would have refused to continue on had GLaDOS not told her that the WCC would rather die in a fire than hinder her progress. Chell believed her and incinerated it.
She did not handle it very well. She was able to sorta compartmentalize her grief and keep going, but when Chell escaped to the broken down parts of the facility, she had a minor meltdown and resolved to kill GLaDOS -- partly because she thought that's what she would need to do to escape, but also for to get revenge for the Cube.
