i have a question for my FList. have any of you been to Paris? if so, is it possible to do a day trip? and again, if you could, what would you recommend seeing, given that you only have one day and must leave by dinner time-ish

with only one day? mmm of course you have to go see the Eiffel Tower...

Le Louvre can be done but it depends on what you want to see there, you'd have to focus on specific things or sections you want to see... to be honest I'd rather see Les Champs-Elysées (with Arc de Triomphe, place de la Concorde, Les Tuileries gardens nearby), Notre-Dame-de-Paris and Montmartre (so pretty with the Sacré Coeur and its artist gathering past, and it's a hill so you can see the city from there... and the movie Amélie is set there)

it's very easy to go to all these places by métro

really, it depends on your personal preferences (and in January walking in the streets might be too cold?)

I last did Paris one December a few years back - yep, it was cold for walking.

I pretty much did what you've described above, plus a few fashion stores like Issy Miyake and Chanel (I went with a gay fashionista...) But that was a weekend trip. I don't remember what Metro stops to go to for the attractions though. Will have to look that stuff up.

One thing I do remember, and won't do again - don't try climbing all those stairs at Sacre Coeur with a backpack on.... ;-)

They do Seine river trips, but having done one in winter, I'd say it might be too cold for that.

hmm. the Louvre itself is hard to do in just one day. I only spent a weekend in Paris myself, and it was oh, 13 years ago, lol. I think my favorite place that I visited was Sacre Coeur, not for any rational reason though. I saw Versailles only in December and definitely felt like I missed out also.
