For years I was convinced I had heart problems. My mother refused to let me talk to the doctor about my frequent chest pains because she was afraid of what it would do to the family's health insurance if I DID have heart problems ( Read more... )

Panic attacks are scary things. Particularly if you have no idea what is happening to you! Even with the meditative techniques I've learned over the years, I still have to take a daily dose of Ativan to control my anxiety.

Of course thinking you're having a cardiac event only makes the panic attack WORSE.

And having your own MOTHER not let you talk to a doctor?? That angers me beyond measure.

(Remember, my uncle died because their parents wouldn't take him to a doctor when he got pneunomia - so this is something that deeply angers me.)

At the time she and I had the same doctor. I later ratted her out to her doctor for the untreated diabetes symptoms she wasn't telling him about.

damn. mom should be concerned, chest pains are nothing to poo poo at. this is why I changed lady doctors after the doctor screwed me over. (figuratively)

I was reading Not Always Right (or something like that), which had an example of panic attacks. At which point I was like "dude that's me!"

It's not the first thing anyone thinks of. I just thought I was being overly emotional or something. *sigh*

I get chest pains on occasion, too, though not as frequently anymore. Now if I could stop being congested, perhaps I could learn some breathing techniques, too. Glad you had success!

My rare random chest pains don't seem to come from heart problems OR panic attacks (so obviously I worry if I'll recognize them if I ever *do* have them). The one doctor I told about it who then listened to my chest said from the location and type of occurence, it's most likely an adhesion in front of the lung that gets momentarily yanked on by random deep breathing.
