Eternal Wish

So my anison translation career(?) took a huge step today when I mentioned to Saori Sakura that I was t/ling Eternal Wish (it was unintentional...), and got a reply from her to say she was interested in seeing it. It was part of a failed mini-marathon on V-Day so I didn't finish it, but this morning I was shocked at her reply. She wrote the song,

Your translation of Re-sublimity, agony and Suppuration still rank as one of the best ones I've ever seen for the songs. So I think you shouldn't doubt yourself so much and put trust in what you know.

While there will always be people better than you, I don't think that should be something that gets you down. I find that a lot of people who are technically good translators (meaning that the grammar/word choices are fitting and quite exact) tend to forget about the poetry that song lyrics have and people who don't have such an exact command are more likely to feel around to get at the heart of what the original writer was aiming at. And even if you don't get it quite right, I don't think anybody but the writer can know what it was meant to mean. Or it might not be definite.

If you think you can get better at it, then you're leaving yourself open to getting better at it, and by doing so, you will get better at it. Which is a good thing.

That said, I would trust your t/l work.

Honestly, I think everyone who does anything creative feels this way sometimes, but if it's something you enjoy doing, then do it, and try not to worry about whether you're "good enough". There's always going to be someone better out there - and the subjective nature of translation means that this is true for everybody because there is no objective "best", if that makes sense. But that doesn't mean you're not good, or that what you do doesn't have value.

FWIW I think your translations are quite poetic - and I've always been impressed by your translations of those memetastic Touhou songs. Did I ever tell you I once planned to translate Kero 9 Destiny, but gave up because I couldn't make sense of the in-jokes? So I was really glad when I saw you'd done it and explained them all.
