"Uh oh”
She can't believe she just said that! She sees the brief flash of hurt across his face and, oh god, he's stepping back from her, not far, but enough to make her feel like a boulder has been placed on top of her lungs. She can't breathe.
“No, Ben, wait, I'm sorry --”
Ben looks confused, but it's hard to decide if it's what he did or what she said that confuses him more.
“Leslie, you don't need to apologize; it's okay, I get it - I was out of line, we could lose our jobs, I'm sor--”
Leslie cuts him off, she doesnt want him to apologize, “No! I wanted you to! I mean, I didn't know you were going to... or at least not then, I mean, in Indianapolis, we had wine and, well, I mean, we were talking and...” She was rambling, she knew it, she just didn't want to mess this up. She took a small breath, the boulder was still pressing on her lungs, she tried to get her brain working properly again “I don't know why I said that just now. Please don't think that I didn't want you to ...”
Leslie starts to blush and looks down, wondering what is wrong with her? This is Ben for crying out loud! She's wanted him for, well, too long now, and it's been hard going back and forth between wanting to be together and not wanting to be fired, but even when she knew all of the problems, she still wanted him, and he wanted her! So why is this so hard?! She's struggling with these thoughts and trying to find the right thing to say or do, and she just barely raises her eyes up to see Ben take a step back toward her. She lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding. That little step back toward her lifted the boulder -- she didn't even realize how heavy that was until now when she could breathe again. For the briefest moment, in some wordless, unintelligible part of her, she had actually thought she had ruined this, this, whatever this was or would be or could be. She was a little surprised at how much the thought of losing him before she even really had him terrified her.
Ben gives her his little half smile -- her smile as she likes to think of it, since she's never seen him look at anyone else that way -- and he raises his hand up to her face and strokes her cheek with his thumb. Then he pushes a little piece of her hair back toward her ear and she can't take it. Her brain goes blank -- no more words, just actions, no time to think -- and she grabs his hand from her cheek and starts to pull him into the doorway. She registers on some unimportant level his surprise at the suddenness of her movement, but she doesn't think about it, or even get concerned, because once they're inside and the door is closed, he'll figure it out.
But Ben deserves more credit than that apparently because once he's been pulled through the door, he beats her to the knob and closes it before pulling her in tightly. She gasps a little as their bodies collide and anticipates another kiss, but Ben wraps his free arm around her, goes back to playing with her hair gently, and smiles at her - oh god, her heart might have just melted. On another front though, she feels like every cell in her body is in agony because all she wants here and now, in his office, slightly orange with the setting sun outside and no one around to stop them, is for him to make her forget where and who she is... and why, seriously, god, why hasn't he kissed her again?!
“So... maybe another uh oh?” he asks, eyes bright, one eyebrow arched, and smiling down at her... or is he smirking?
She frowns the tiniest bit and tries to make her brain work. He's teasing her?! She's can't even quite comprehend this when his lips are suddenly on hers again. So intense, but also sweet and soft. This time is not quite like in the hallway, where it was intense and so hot, but there was an impulsiveness to it then, a different kind of need. This is what she would have imagined their first kiss to be like (if her imagination was way more awesome), and it was slow, gentle even, but not careless, more like it was building. It sent shivers down her spine and her stomach started doing backflips. Actually, now that she's starting to think of it, this kiss is getting deeper, more passionate. Their tongues are dancing together, Ben is holding her tighter than he had a minute ago and her breath is starting to come in small gasps. And when did they move backwards? She doesn't remember her back being against the wall before, but she's certainly not complaining...
She could feel his body against hers -- he was pressing pretty hard against her now, but this only seemed to fuel her. She realized, belatedly, that her hands were sort of lamely hanging at her sides (honestly, she'd totally forgot she had hands...). She made the decision to slide them up his chest, onto his shoulders and then neck, and one of them she wound into his hair. The feel of him... Mmm, she wasn't sure if that was in her head or out loud or both, but she doesn't seem to care much either way. Her head was swimming, still locked in this intense embrace, and every part of their bodies pressed together, her fingers closed into a fist in his hair.
Ben seemed to notice this movement since it was at that moment he moved his kisses down from her mouth to just under her jaw. This made her gasp a little bit and she felt him smile against her neck. “Uh oh,” he whispered, still smiling, and she laughed a small breathy laugh. He was definitely teasing her! She meant to respond, after all, she could play too, but she just couldn't seem to get any coherent thoughts together when she felt his hand slide across her stomach and start on her shirt buttons. And suddenly she realized that she didn't care, as long as he kept kissing her, he could tease her all night if he wanted to.
And apparently he did want to.
