It's basic theology. It's talking about how the road to destruction is wide, but the one to salvation is thin and only a few find it. Essentially, Hesiod is saying that the path to destruction is easy to follow and get swept away in, but the path of leading a good life is hard at first, and you have to sweat and put effor into it. But as you go it becomes easier, and when you reach the end, the end effect is as great and wonderful as it was difficult and rough to start.
