I'm going to go with "both" as my answer Alex... But then again, my view with language is completely collapsable into a "you understood me didn't you" mentality. I think both phrases point to the same content, namely that the person before you, or the person at which the comment is directed, is a cook of high quality. Literally interpreted the language of Robin's phrases would indicate that the speaker has both experienced the complimentee's cooking and evaluated it in positive terms, and that the speaker has likewise tasted the complimentee. The act of tasting goes unmodified by the (errr) modifier 'best' since any modifier could replace 'best' and leave the fact that the cook was tasted undisturbed. 'You are the gayest cook I've ever tasted'; 'You are the fattest cook I ever tasted'; 'You are the tallest cook I ever tasted' and so forth, all have the same structure, and the tasting in this paradigm remains unchanged by the evaluation, since there in nothing about the tasting that could influence the judgement that someone is ( ... )
