Icon tutorial: Renton Thurston

Go from this to any of these:

For Paint Shop Pro 9, translatable.

1 Acquire a base - I used a scan of Renton from Eureka SeveN (the scan was huge so I just cropped Renton so you could see what it looked like before I resized it).

2 Crop, resize, and sharpen. I got this:
Well nevermind, I had a copy of the b&w base but I accidentally saved over it. :(

3 Because this was black and white, I obviously wanted to colour it. So colour your image (I did this after I did step 2 but you can do it before if you want) - make new layers for every different colour you use in case you want to lower the opacity on one of them. Set them all to multiply.

4 Merge all your layers, then create a new layer and fill it with a cream colour, like #f8eac8. Set it to multiply; for my image, I lowered the opacity but it just depends on your personal preferences.

5 New layer, fill it with a dark blue colour like #02102a. Set it to exclusion.

6 New layer, fill with a light blue like #baf4ef, and set to burn.

7 Now duplicate your original layer, drag it to the top, and desaturate it. Set it to soft light. So far we have something like this:

8 Add this texture by colorfilter and set it to multiply.
And now we have this:

9 Alternative 1: Add this brush by meleada.
What I did was I created a new 100x100 white image, then added the brush to it in black. Then I made a new layer on top and filled it with white and set it to exclusion. I merged all my layers, then copied the brush image and pasted it as a new layer on my icon-in-progress (set to burn). I'm sure there are other ways to do this but to me this method was efficient, hopefully it's not too confusing! If it is just drop a comment and I'll explain better. For your convenience I provided the brush above already with the exclusion layer and everything so all you have to do is copy and paste. :0

10 Add a tiny text brush or make your own (as I did), and you'll get this (I also added step 13 to my result below):

11 Alternative 2: Add this texture by cynicalsnark. As with the previous brush, I pasted it as a new image, added a new exclusion layer in white, then merged and pasted it onto my icon. Now, duplicate it twice; set the bottom two to burn, and the top one to multiply. Once again I provided the texture already fixed up so you don't have to do it.

12 Add your text and/or other brushes to the icon. Mine:

13 Alternative 3: Make a new layer on top of everything and fill it with black; set it to burn at around 30% opacity. You may have to drag your text layers above this layer, as I did with mine. Otherwise, they might end up being somewhat dark. Here's my result:

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing! If you have any questions about the tutorial please feel free to drop a comment and I'll answer.
