I got to see another Math Department Candidate's lecture today. This irish guy from New York, he was a pretty cool guy. He did a lesson about about Dihedryal Groups which is some Abstract Algebra stuff he's doing research on at SUNY. This is the 3rd candidate I've gotten to review and I liked this guy most out of the 3. I like reviewing these ( Read more... )

I was just wandering around your myspace and saw a mention of the Higdon's spring party. Are they doing those again? I remember attending a Christmas party at their home way back in 1996. :)

That's pretty damn cool that you get to review the new candidates for the math department. I don't think that's something they did when I was at the college. Who's left in the department?

Yeah the Higdon's do a party every xmas and spring for the math majors/minors and faculty.

As far as whose still around:
Robert Bentley
Christine Cosgrove
Gerry Higdon
AbdulZekeria
Mark Snyder
Lucy Dechene
Claire McAndrew is the department chair
Dr. Barbato was hired a few years ago (2001 i think, as Dr. Saadi before she got married)
and Dr. Wangsness is new this year
Dr. Light retired but he still teaches some classes as a part timer every now and then.

And their hiring someone new for next fall, the candidates usually present something for 20-30 minutes to a group of students and Math Professors and we fill out a form about what we liked and didn't like etc... Its kind of cool, one guy did a thing about solving the rubic's cube using group theory, I'm only in Calc2 and Linear right now so it didn't make much sense to me but some peeople in higher classes seem to enjoy it. and wow this comment is painfully long so i'll stop now.

Hehe.

I don't think they've done a party in the years I was there. I changed my major in 1996 to math from education and I remember going to their home for a Christmas party. When I went back to FSC in 1999 (and was there through the fall semester of 2002), there was no mention of a Christmas or Spring party. I wonder if it's something they decided to do again. I remember having so much fun and we tried to get Snyder to help us out on our Calc II final while he was drunk. :P

I think it's great that they're giving the students a voice in who they hire. God knows there are a few in that department that need to go. LOL.
