“S-so the reason you started to ask me out...”
“Was because Ryutaro was moving here for high school,” Yamada finished my sentence. “I want to say the reason I overreacted when I saw him kiss you was because it meant I lost our deal and I hated to lose...but maybe that wasn’t it.”
“Ryo-chan?” I was startled when he abruptly hugged me and could only pat him awkwardly on the back.
“I’m sorry, I made you suffer these past few weeks, didn’t I? I figured Ryutaro didn’t tell you, he probably thought it was betraying me if he did or something.” His shoulders shook and I felt wet drops soaking through my shirt. “I actually already knew...even back then, that I couldn’t possibly win. The way you two got along, the way he talked about you and the way you look at him now, I knew there was no way I could compete. I was pretty stupid, wasn’t I?”
Yamada pulled back and wiped his eyes dry. “You’re not stupid, Ryo-chan,” I told him gently. “You were just confused...and in love. My nee-chan always says love makes us do stupid things but if realize it and then apologize for it, then you’ve already began to repair your mistakes..”
“Thanks, Chii. You’re really my best friend, aren’t you?”
“Of course!” I smiled at him brightly. “You’ve always been and always will be my best friend, Ryo-chan!” Laughing, he ruffled my hair the way he used to whenever we were just laughing and joking around. “Umm...Ryo-chan? W-where’s your cousin?”
“Ryutaro?” If Yamada noticed how red I was, he thankfully didn’t mention it. “He started coughing last night and had a high fever this morning. There was no way my mom was letting him out of the house.”
“Eh? H-he’s sick?! B-but he was still fine last night, how did he suddenly get so ill?”
“Knowing him, he probably didn’t want to worry you, even if he wasn’t feeling well.” Yamada reached into his pockets and placed two sets of keys on the table. “That one’s yours. Well, his to yours. This one’s mine. My mom went shopping with my sisters, they won’t be home until dinner time, dad’s working late, and I’ll be out of the house too, so if you could do me a favor, and take care of a certain sick person...?”
“You’re very subtle, Ryo-chan.”
“Don’t look so nervous, Ryutaro’ll be happy to see you. Plus, I told him you were going to visit, so if you don’t go, he’ll be really disappointed...”
“Now you’re just meddling.” I picked up the keys and fingered the cool metal teeth. “M-morimoto-kun will be okay, though?”
“If he stays in bed and rests like the way he should be, then yes. Oh, and Chii? You know what I think he’ll really like? If you call him by his real name.”
Heart thumping, I inserted the key into its hole and cautiously entered the house. The air was quiet and still; I tried not to make noise as I took off my shoes. I looked around the living room and realized with a sense of nolstagia that I haven’t visited for the longest time.
“Chinen?” I nearly tripped over my own two feet. “What are you doing here? How did you get in?”
“S-shouldn’t you be in bed?” He looked good in his school uniform, he looked hot in his waiter uniform, he looked cute with an apron, but it was my first time seeing him in a regular shirt and normal jeans. Somehow, it looked natural on him and that just made him look even better than usual.
“Umm...it’s almost lunch time. I sleep in, but I don’t sleep in that late.” He came over and goosebumps grew on my skin where he grabbed my wrist. “Are you hungry? Do you want something to eat or drink?”
“Aren’t you supposed to be sick in bed with a high fever?” I asked as he pulled me into the house.
Ryutaro stopped and placed my hand on his forehead. My heart quickened at the unexpected contact. Then he leaned forward and I went red at how close we were.
When he spoke, his breath warmed my lips. “Nah, I think I’m normal. Who told you I was sick?”
“R-r-r-ryo-chan. He c-came over in the morning and t-t-told me everything,” I whispered, barely realizing now I had been tricked. Yamada was going to pay for lying later.
“So you know?” he asked, moving back slightly. “I’m sorry, I should have told you but I thought it was Ryosuke’s right.”
“It’s okay, you were just doing what you thought was right.” My stomach suddenly growled and I covered it with my arms, embarrassed.
Ryutaro laughed. “Hungry? I’ll make curry.”
“Ah, wait.” I grabbed his arm without thinking and my fingers tingled with his warmth. “Umm...I’ll make the food. Since you’re always making me breakfast and all.”
Ryutaro brightened up and led me into the kitchen to showed me where everything was.
He snuck up behind me while I was cutting carrots and wrapped his arms around my waist. “So when you heard from Ryosuke that I was sick, you got worried and had to come see me?”
“I-I never said that.” I tried to focus on the knife and not accidentally cut myself. “Besides, isn’t it normal for a person to worry if h-his boyfriend’s sick?”
“You admit I’m your boyfriend?” I could hear the smile in Ryutaro’s voice.
“I didn’t say that either.” I went numb as his hands covered mine, gently loosening my grip so the knife fell on the cutting board. He rested his chin on my shoulder, interlacing our fingers together. “B-but maybe I like you. Just a little bit.” I turned my head, meaning to peck his cheek but found my lips on his instead.
