Question about three-legged hamster

Apr 25, 2008 17:44

I had the opportunity to adopt a dwarf with three legs today, but didn't. While she was awfully cute and sweet, I wasn't sure if there were any other health issues besides her missing leg (it looked to be a birth defect and not caused by an accident or anything else). Should I have taken her? While I could take a hamster to the vet if problems arose later on, I'd prefer not to adopt one that I knew would have health issues (and medical bills). Of course, if the hamster needed vet attention, it would get it, but I'd prefer not to have that possibility straight out of the gate.

It was her back left foot that was missing. There's a little bit of a leg stump that she gets around on, and she was using the stump to scratch herself just like a little non-disabled hammie would. She ran in her wheel a little bit, and while she ran a little bit crooked, she didn't seem to be in any pain or be bothered by it. But I'm wondering if her little leg stump could get worn down from being walked on/dragged around, and if that could cause an infection. Also, since it looks to be genetic, I'm not sure if she has any other medical issues.

Any advice? Should I adopt her, or hope someone else will come along and care for her?

UPDATE: I've just come home with my new three-legged friend. Thanks for the advice, all! :)
