homo sapiens seeks mesocricetus auratus

Last month my beloved Syrian cyclops, Jack, passed away. It seems soon to get another one, but you know when you're ready, and I find that my house is far too quiet without the tap-a-tap-a-tap-a-tap-a-tap-a-tap-a-THUNK of knobbly little feet on the wheel in the dark hours of the night ( Read more... )

I'm sorry for your loss. :( It is seriously so hard losing a little friend/family member...

I'm not sure what your position is on obtaining hamsters, but I got my latest one from a pet store... I know that's not the ideal way to get one, but she is so, so, soooooo sweet. I love her so much. <3

If you're not opposed to pet stores, I literally just went in, one of the employees introduced me to all of their hamsters, and I picked my favorite one personality-wise. They were all very sweet, didn't bite, but were a little jumpy because they didn't know me, of course... but my sweet little Lily has bonded to me and is just the sweetest little hamster ever. <3 It only took me a few minutes to realize she was the one I wanted to take home, although I will admit it was hard! All of the hams there were so cute, inquisitive, and friendly, but there was just something about Lily...

I am a bad person to ask advice on this perhaps. XD Chimera (icon) was selected for us out of a litter by the RSPCA people. With Yeti (current hamster), I went to the store looking for a dwarf, saw the sign for a long haired Syrian, said, "oh let's look at that little guy, just to see," and when she lifted the house he was hiding in, he was so petrified that I immediately became overwhelmed with pity and said, "I'LL TAKE HIM."

... bit of a sucker for a sob story, me.

Don't get a syrian that is 6 weeks or less because they are more suseptible to wet-tail at that age, and your hamster will probably die within a week or two if not taken to the vet to get some meds. I made that mistake recently. If i were you i would adopt a hamster on craigslist. it might take a bit of hunting and waiting, but someone is always eventually moving and has to give theirs up for adoption, and they are more likely to be tame. i was too impatient so i bought mine 6 weeks old from a pet store. big mistake. he got wettail within the first two days and i had to spend 91 dollars on an appointment and meds :/
