little dove-grey mouse ham

Meet... somebody! I don't know who he is, just yet. I picked him up at a pet shop today, after poking around in the Vat O' Hams. I told the woman helping me that I was interested in two things: male (no surprise babies, thanks) and calm; I wasn't fussed much about color. After some investigation of various candidates, this little guy let me hold ( Read more... )

Eeeheee! He does. A little, little, little dust bunny. I hadn't realized just how gigantuous Jack was!

"Somebody" is an adorable little sable. Congrats on your new family member.

Every time I lose one I say "never again", but by this point, 4 hamsters later, I know I'm a liar.

Sable! I'd wondered about that, but all the examples I saw online were much darker - brown, almost black. He's really a lovely color, dove-grey and cream with... eyeliner, or spectacles, or something.

He's adorable! I want another one so bad, but I don't have a place to put it anymore.

And your story totally had me picture someone walking around with a little hammy in their pocket to test their blood XD

He is cute, isn't he?

I think I'll stick with the needles, much as I hate them (... the anticipation and pressing the button is worse than the actual pinprick part) because, my goodness, that one hamster could bite. It really put some oomph into it. Just strolled up, casual as you please, gave me a sniff, then, CHOMP!

My first hamster was ridiculously big - there are old photos of nine-year-old me with what looks like a small guinea pig that, nope, is actually a gigantic hamster. Jack was small by comparison, but even so he was big for a hamster.

I've been calling this new one "little mouse" because he seems so tiny!

Watch out at pet stores, they're notorious for incorrectly sexing their animals, and then the people who bring them home house them with another and get surprise babies.
And that would probably suck :-P
Good luck tho, he's adorable :-P

I made sure to check their undercarriages myself, which is how I wound up with this one - the runner-up, a lovely cinnamon brown wild-type (with the cheek stripes and all), was female. Surprise babies and rodent estrus just ain't my thing.

We have proof he's a he: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sagrei/6965311792/ Hello, balls!
