Hm, that sounds quite odd to me. I have never had a hamster do something like that before. The biting thing, but my hamsters do change their schedule around as they get older. When they were babies they slept almost all of the time, and played for a few hours. Then as they got older, they would be grumpy, but would never bite me, they would squeak whenever I would touch them, but never bit me. Their play schedule got longer, and their sleep schedule was shortened

I agree that his becoming more active may simply be due to his growing older. I haven't had a hamster in many years but I have baby rats, and in the past couple of months they have become more active during the day. They would also nibble my fingers and usually I would just make a squeaking sound - trying to sound like an irate rat. They will still nibble a bit if I smell like food but they are no longer nippy.
Sounds to me like it might be a good idea to take the wheel out of the cage at least 3-6 hours a day. Hamsters can become "addicted" to using their wheels (a bit like when lions or polar bears in zoos just pace back and forth in the same place
