Taskmaster-adjacent things and also SF books meme

Since I last posted, our household has acquired a new stove (with a working oven) and a purple mystery snail named Manischewitz. Both are at L's insistence, but I've been responsible for a bulk of the associated work :P (I have to admit, it's a cute snail, and it's nice to have a working oven again.)

I've read hardly any of those sci-fi books ... hm ...

It's a rather odd list! Some classics, some new stuff, but also a lot of choices I don't hear talked about very much in the actual SF community. I think the other thing is, they stuck to pure sci-fi (well, more or less; The Fifth Season is probably actually fantasy even though I think of it as sci-fi too, and I'm not sure what makes The City and the City sci-fi rather than urban fantasy, e.g.) -- and I think you and I both tend to read more fantasy than sci-fi.

I've only read twenty four of those science fiction books, though some of them I wouldn't class as science fiction, for example 1984 isn't a science fiction book, it's a dystopian book.

Yeah, I was surprised to see 1984 classified as science fiction too. I guess they counted it because it was set in the future vs when it was written? But I agree that dystopia feels like a different genre than SF, although something can be both.
