[Background] The single child of a branch manager for the large chain department store Junes, Yosuke Hanamura is city born and bred. His family moved to Inaba six months prior to the publicized affair and subsequent murder of TV announcer Mayumi Yamano after being given the offer to operate one of Junes' newest stores. After being relatively popular at his old school back in the city Yosuke assumed he would make just as many friends in this new town, but was instead met with disdain and sometimes outright hate from both classmates and adults alike. The reason for that being that the brand new Junes store was forcing the local business to lose money and close up, destroying part of the culture and putting many families out of jobs.
Fast forward to the beginning of the new school year, March 2011. Still mostly friendless, he has a few close acquanitances in the form of Chie Satonaka and Yukiko Amagi, two girls in his class that he gets along with some of the time. On this first day of school a new student joins the class - Souji Seta, another boy who moved to Inaba from the city. Even though Souji is only there for the year, Yosuke feels like they can relate to each other. Later that day the body of Mayumi Yamano is found dangling upside-down off a TV antenna by a third-year student on her way home from school. This third-year is Saki Konishi, a close friend and not-so-obvious crush of Yosuke's that works part-time at Junes even though her family runs a liquor store in the local shopping district. After being taken in for questioning by the police, Saki fails to show up at school the following day, something that isn't made a big deal of until the following day-- when she turns up dead.
Yosuke, who is devastated by this event, is desparate for answers. Since he witnessed Saki on the Midnight Channel the night before her body was found he comes to the conclusion that it's connected and so he ends up dragging Souji into the TV world they discovered the day prior to find out exactly what happened. They follow the TV's inhabitant, Teddie, to a place within the other world that looks like a twisted version of the shopping district, just outside the Konishi liquor store. After being assaulted by Shadows, Yosuke and Souji enter the store, hearing echos of voices that express hatred towards Junes and disdain towards Saki for "working for the enemy", including that of her own father. As Yosuke begs them to stop, Saki's voice is suddenly heard. What starts off as seemingly kind words towards Yosuke turn into harsh critisms, and it becomes apparent that she really hated him all this time.
As the two boys turn to leave the shop they come across someone unexpected-- another Yosuke! This Yosuke is harsher, full of sarcasm and bitterness. This is his Shadow, a physical manifestation of all the negative thoughts and emotions that run though him. The Shadow begins mocking Yosuke, pointing out every single one of his faults, like the fact that he hates Inaba and Junes, and that he really only came to the TV world because he was bored and needed something to do. The real Yosuke denies everything, and when the Shadow finally says that they're the same person, he replies forcefully with "You're not me!" The Shadow then goes berserk and transforms into a large monster and Yosuke falls unconcious, drained by this sudden transformation. Souji ends up being forced to defeat the Shadow himself.
After the Shadow is defeated it calms down and Yosuke manages to wake up again. Confronted with his true self he begins to deny it once more but after being reassured by Souji that it's alright he finally accepts the Shadow as being part of him. The Shadow transforms into the Persona Jiraiya and Yosuke is given the power to summon it.
It's at this point that it's determined that people who appear on the Midnight Channel end up dying when it becomes foggy, so Yosuke teams up with Souji, then later Chie, Yukiko, Kanji, Rise, and Teddie to form an investigation team to both try to find out who the killer is and to save anyone who gets thrown into the TV world before the next fog sets in. Part-way through the year the team winds up convinced that they've found out who the killer is-- second-year Mitsuo Kubo, a fellow student from their school, who seemingly threw himself into the TV after he kills their homeroom teacher Mr. Morooka in a fit of rage. Once they rescue him, Mitsuo owes up to his "crimes", stating that he killed for attention. This puts Yosuke into a blind rage, since this meant that Saki had no reason to die. He calms down once they call the police, but the thought of revenge still hasn't left his head...
It later becomes apparent that the real killer was not Mitsuo, that he only took the blame for all the attention, when the detective Naoto Shirogane goes missing several months later. The investigation team manages to save her, but now are really in a fix as to who the real killer could be. The last kidnapping comes as a shock to everyone involved-- Souji's seven-year-old cousin, Nanako], becomes the newest victim. They rush to save her, and at the same time apprehend the man responsible for all the kidnappings and murders, Taro Namatame, who jumped in after Nanako after he threw her into the TV. The team rescues both of them, but at a cost, as Nanako was too frail to handle the TV world and is immediately hospitalized after being saved. Namatame is as well, and winds up being sent to the same hospital while he recovers before being questioned by the police.
The fog at the end of that month comes, but it doesn't lift. Instead it stays, causing the residents of Inaba to become paranoid and ill. Nanako's condition gets worse, and she ends up dying while in hospital care. This affects everyone in the investigation team in different ways, some suffering extreme grief and others, such as Yosuke, filling with unspeakable rage. They all go after Namatame, cornering him in his hospital room, taking note of the large TV placed in there so he could make a "convenient" escape. Yosuke decides that he should have a "taste of his own medicine", implying that they throw the man into the TV and walk away, committing murder themselves yet taking revenge for Nanako's death. It's only after Souji insists that there's still something more to the whole picture and more or less tells Yosuke to shut the hell up (okay, he actually tells him to, there is no more or less here) that they decide that murder isn't the way for them to go and that they're still missing something. Later on they go back to Namatame to question him, and it turns out that while he did throw everyone that they saved into the TV, he wasn't responsible for the first two murders. Namatame thought that he was saving his kidnapping victims, and reveals that he was acting on someone else's word.
In the meantime it turns out that Nanako isn't really dead (yay) so everyone is considerably happier. But now there was a problem, just who is the real killer?
As the group enjoys dinner, they mull over who exactly could be the killer, attempting to narrow it down to several choices. It becomes to difficult, and several team members, including Yosuke, head outside to clear their heads and see if they can think it through. With the clues given to them, Souji manages to deduce that it's really Adachi that is the true killer. Once this fact is realized, they all attempt to go after him at the hospital but the detective escapes through the TV conveniently placed in Namatame's room. Deciding that trying to follow him into the TV then and there would be a bad idea, they all decide to regroup the following day at Junes. Entering the TV and using Teddie to locate where Adachi is hiding, they discover him at the original room that Souji, Yosuke, and Chie found in their initial foray into the other world. Admitting that the entire thing was just a game to him (he did it for the lulz), Adachi escapes through a portal he makes, disappearing into a twisted version of Inaba itself. They now have until the end of the year to basically play tag with a sociopath in a world that he has total control over. How fun.
[Personality] Yosuke is what you'd call the lovable goof - he's easy-going and friendly, yet a rather clumsy guy, becoming acquainted with the inside of a trash can on more than one occasion riding his bike to school. He also has a habit of speaking before thinking, the results of which almost always wind up poorly (for him). He's a bit of a flirt around girls, and although his attempts at dating always wind up in failure, he generally shrugs it off with a smile and "I tried".
Despite being from the city, Yosuke has a touch of homophobia, viewing any actions that could be seen as gay as "weird". He tries to keep to this himself, but after the introduction of Kanji Tatsumi to his close group of friends he can't help but throw a joke here and there to help him cope with it. Unfortunately this goes back to his remarkable ability to not think before he speaks so said jokes wind up insulting and he just comes off sounding like an asshole. There's also a theory that the only reason he's "homophobic" because he's so deep in the closet himself that he acts like a jerk to Kanji to cover it up. But we'll not get into that right now.
Although he moved to Inaba six months prior to the murders, Yosuke has a hard time making friends. A large part of this was due to his affiliation with Junes and the fact that his family was resented for being the reason why local businesses were closing down. It's doubtful he'll come across this problem in Somarium but, because of this he tends to latch on to the first person that makes him feel welcomed.
[Specialties/Abilities] Yosuke is a Persona-user - that is, he has the ability to manifest part of his psyche into a physical form to act as a weapon or shield. For the sake of not being stupidly strong his ability to use a Persona is unavailable to him in Somarium. In addition to that he is adept at using knives and short swords to fight, wielding one in each hand and using them to strike rather than throw. He can also play the guitar and isn't too horrible at karaoke.
[Affection] Yosuke is super friendly but kind of dense so he'll try to be buddy-buddy with all the guys and probably attempt to hit on the girls a few times before taking a hint. He's up for dating whoever's interested, but has he mentioned how he's REALLY NOT GAY? BECAUSE REALLY, HE'S NOT. STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW, I GUARANTEE IT.
[Fighting] Even though his sense of self-preservation is practically nonexistent, Yosuke isn't the type of guy to go looking for fights. Rile him up enough, then yeah, he'll probably want to punch you in the face, but in the end he reserves shanking for people he really really doesn't like (looking at you, Adachi).
[Other Facts] A large part of his personality develops during the social links in the game and aren't necesarily a part of the main story. So even though his character is taken from near the endgame, social link-wise he's only rank seven - before the one major development of his character, but at a point where it's built up enough that it could happen at any time. So uh, if anyone gets really close to him and he suddenly decides to start pouring his heart out to them and is a crying mess while doing so-- that's why. :x
