Men and Women Behaving Badly (Part One): Whiplash

Okay, so: Yesterday I went by the HMV superstore at the Yonge-Dundas Square, which is unfortunately closing down, which means that everything in there's been slashed by at least 40%. I was thus able to pick up three BluRays and three DVDs for less than fifty dollars, amongst them Damien Chazelle's Whiplash, which I finished watching On Demand in ( Read more... )

And not only can J.K. Simmons actually play the piano, he also A) studied music and B) has a degree in conducting, which shows throughout.

I had no idea! That's great.

Or hell, who knows; maybe Nieman manages to avoid that fate by shacking up with a sixty-year-old barely-repressed dom who makes him his sole pet project for the rest of his life. Maybe they get married at some jazz-themed wedding ten years from now, once Nieman's won every relevant jazz award. Maybe Fletcher dies of a heart-attack in mid-scream and Nieman retires, then start teaching.

Well, I'm here for the jazz-themed 24/7 D/s wedding.

Is really is the happiest possible outcome, in this cornucopia of toxic masculinity! I also love thinking about the wedding photos, considering Teller's so much taller than Simmons. Not to mention the matching tuxedos.

These are two pretty indicative photos of the two of them:

(I note that Simmons has grown the grandpa beard for these, as he always seems to do between gigs. As in that meme which paired a photo of him working out to buff up for Commissioner Gordon with the text post: "Please stop praying for my grandpa, he is too strong now; he broke out of the hospital, no one can stop him.")

What I'm gathering here is that either J.K. Simmons is shorter than I thought he was or Miles Teller is ridiculously tall. Possibly both.

"Please stop praying for my grandpa, he is too strong now; he broke out of the hospital, no one can stop him."

That is magnificent. Also, Commissioner Gordon? Where in the what now?

(I realize that I almost certainly feel so positively toward Simmons as an actor because I saw him first as low-key, wry, take-no-bullshit-but-essentially-compassionate Dr. Skoda on Law & Order, which I realize he was doing now at the exact time time as he was starring on Oz and that's hilarious. Vern would be the worst therapist.)

I was wondering what your thoughts on the movie were! I really ought to watch it as well - if I loved JK Simmons as rapist nazi, I am sure I'll love him as psychotic teacher as well)) It warms my heart that he's gotten major awards for this.
