002 ʗ DREAM

Warnings: Some Madoka Magica spoilers, little girls going crazy
Effects: A sense of nostalgia, then fear, followed by the pain of despair from losing everything

The dream opens to an opera house, the spotlight fixated on a young boy, no older than six years, playing his violin skillfully along with the piano's accompaniment. In the audience, a little girl about the same age is captivated by the sound, and stares in awe and wonder. That girl was Sayaka. Beautiful. She couldn't think of anything more beautiful in her life than the sound of his violin. Relaxing, she closes her eyes, trying to bask more in the wonderful melody.

... But the song never continued. For a brief moment, there was silence, which was then cut by an ominous song played by a string orchestra. Sayaka's eyes shot open, startled by the sudden change. The opera house had become warped, devoid of any people that were sitting on the seats a few seconds ago, those seats now lining the ceiling like a dome, surrounding a single, circular stage. The spotlight was on Sayaka, back in her fourteen-year-old form, wearing her swordsman outfit, her sword in hand. She turned and looked around frantically, trying to find the source of that frightening music. She found it: A spectral string orchestra, its musicians and conductors merely outlines of humans, their only reason for existence being to play for their master.

So she found the source of the music. That's one mystery solved. Now, how does she leave...? She turns around, only to see a mirror in front of her. However, instead of her own reflection, she saw something she hated the most: The boy from earlier, now fourteen years old, holding hands with another girl... Someone who Sayaka once considered a friend and now hated the most. The grip on her sword tightened. Why? Why did it have to be Hitomi? Sayaka was the one who loved classical music as much as he did. Sayaka was the one who stayed by his side when he was hospitalized. Sayaka was the one who sacrificed her own soul to heal his paralyzed hand, so he could play the violin again. So why... Why did he have to choose Hitomi?!

"Aa... AAAAAAAAAAAGH!"

Sayaka let out a blood curdling scream of despair as she swung her blade into the mirror, knocking it down and shattering it. The force of her attack caused a few shards to fly and embed themselves onto her flesh, but she paid no mind to them as she bashed at the fallen mirror again and again, the pieces glass mixing with her freely falling tears. Sayaka was crying, but despite that, she began to giggle as she continued relentlessly assaulting the frame with her sword. Soon, that giggling turned into laughing. Broken, deranged laughing.

"That's right... That's right!" she gasped between fits of maniacal laughter. "If I wish for it hard enough... All the pain will go away!"

-------------

[Sayaka rises from her bed quickly, the sound of Rachmaninoff's Vocalise playing on her radio calming her nerves. Sighing, she reaches towards her nightstand to press the stop button, but notices her Dreamberry recording. She gives the camera a very tired smile.]

... Hey, even the happiest of people can have bad dreams. I'm no exception. Anyway, don't you think it's kinda rude to be spying on other people? Especially a girl so young? Iyaaaa~n, how shameless.

[Despite not feeling her best at all, she still attempted to make a joke out of it. She knows that her housemates, as well as the other magical girls, could see this, but... At this point, she didn't care enough to filter.

Oh, speaking of which...]

Wait, actually, that reminds me... Does anyone know where I can learn to play the violin? I started taking piano lessons a few weeks ago, but... let's just say that didn't work out very well.
