So a woman from Real Life gave me this big ol' suitcase of supplies to take to South Africa, for the orphanage there.  I don't recall ever agreeing to this; actually, I think I gave her a vague non-answer when she first asked me.  Second time, she caught me: "So, how many suitcases are you taking to South Africa."  "Well, I want to fit all my stuff ( Read more... )

I'm sorry you have such a crazy suitcase situation, that really isn't very fair. It seems like whenever people go to Africa they always get extra crap foisted on them. When my friend Jason went to Ghana, all the African exchange students and Ghanaian PhD students were giving him tons and tons of crap to take along with him. Anyways, I hope the packing (and the trip too ;-)) works out really well!

Yo! A quick bit of practical advice before you leave...tomorrow! Yikes! If you haven't figured out how to make everything fit yet, don't forget about your carry-on. All you really need in there is a small book since there's always plenty of in-flight entertainment on these looooong flights. Soooo, that means, since most airlines allow a standard back-pack on board (plus another overhead item if you like, which I don't, it too much to deal with, but that still leaves you with some more room if needed), you can fit a change of clothes (HIGHLY recommened for freshening up half-way) and all your small tolietry items in there as well. I'd recommend bringing an extra pair of pants, an extra shirt, and two or three extra pairs of underwear. Should anything happen to your luggage, you'll be able to live for a while with just these items. You also really only need shirts and such for about a week and a half. I wore a lot of my shirts twice before washing them. Might be a tad gross, but definetly works when you're working with kids -- pretty ( ... )
