I don't know about anyone else, but my personal enjoyment regarding Perez Hilton getting smacked in the face isn't so much about that he did get smacked in the face, but why he got smacked in the face.
Perez Hilton, his site, his ilk and what he is about is foul. To be sure, he's not up there with al-Bashir or Stalin, but I still believe there's a special place in Hell for him.
Does anyone have the right to smack him in the face? No. (It's kinda the same with the Eminem/Sacha thing, there are better ways to point out peoples lameness.) And anyone who has taken Women's Studies 101 is aware of the dangers of the victim blaming mindset. Blah blah blah, although my dog jumping into my lap when he's really excited that I'm home and accidentally scratched me in the face probably hurt more than that scratch under Perez's eye but whatever.
But I'm not really sure Perez is a victim here. He wasn't attacked for his sexual preference. He wasn't in the 'wrong place at the wrong time'. He called someone a "fucking faggot" to antagonize him. Other people have covered that aspect much better than I ever could. However, in an ideal world, no one would resort to violence no matter what verbal abuse someone slings at them. But in my ideal world, women could gain weight without being ridiculed in the media. People could go through shit that throws them a la Britney Spears without being put through hell. No one gets made fun of their appearance (and really, who is Perez Hilton to comment on anyones appearance?) beyond bad fashion choices_ Etc, etc, etc.
The line of what is hurtful, what is going too far, is subjective. For me it's making a living making fun of people in an immature and spiteful way. For Perez is being hit in the face. I'm not glad he got hit, but I'm glad someone called him on his shit. I hope people continue to call him on his shit. I don't want to live in a world where people like Perez Hilton are famous for drawing genitals on female celebrities pictures. Maybe I'm taking him too seriously but truth be told, he really offends me.
So I don't condone violence but I have no sympathy for him either. And yeah, his "statements" make me laugh, I admit it.
