Over the years I've found that having a colleague with whom one can vent, and who can vent with you, can be very useful.

That colleague has just become our head of group, so my direct line manager. Not sure how this is going to change things - I hope not at all but given recent changes I'm not sure...

True, it can be useful.

I've had something similar happen twice before with co-workers who later became my team manager (very far apart, mind you). I can't keep from viewing things differently as a result, so even if they said it wouldn't change anything, it always did. Possibly more me, than them.

But that wasn't always a negative either.
