The Unnamed Hero
The Unnamed Hero.
Before there were powers of any kind, before people could fly or scientists could be driven to madness or horses could lead leagues of villains, there was just a man who wanted to make the world a little better. His first attempt to help, however, brought nothing but concern from friends and scoldings from his family for putting himself in danger. Even the woman he saved from a fiery death called him foolish. The man, however, knew what was right and decided that he did not need approval or acknowledgment from anyone. And so, shortly after that, he moved to a different city.
The man moved to the most crime filled, desolated, slum like city he could find and got himself an apartment and a job. Then, in secret, he got himself a costume. On nights when he did not work and the streets were filled with nothing but sirens, he put the costume on and roamed the city, doing as many good things as he possibly could before he had to return to being just a man. And he did do good.
The man did so much good that the city prospered and the city officials offered him a position being the city's Hero. They would give him money, a comfortable place to live, and all the recognition he deserved. The hero said he would think about it.
That morning, when the hero returned to being just a man, he was forced to admit the truth that the city no longer needed him. So he packed up his apartment and he moved.
The man did the same thing for many, many cities in his lifetime, bringing peace and prosperity to places that had been riddled with crime and when he died, he was honored by everyone and great stories were told about his life and good deeds. He was so revered and his story so inspiring that the first human to be born with an ability that set him apart from all others chose to follow the example of The Unnamed Hero. He made himself a costume, chose a hero name to distinguish himself from the first and dedicated his ability to helping people. Fortunately for us, most of those born with similar abilities choose to follow in this grand tradition and continue to fight crime and villainy, making the world a better place for each and every single one of us.
