So, at 11:00 am today, I had a job interview. It was for a store called 2nd and Charles? It's a Buy-SEll store that deals in books, music, movies, games, games systems and accessories.
I arrived about a half hour early, just to make sure is wasn't late, but not wanting to go in too early I sat in my jeep for fifteen minutes. I practiced what I would say to the usual interview questions and tried to think of all the questions that weren't usual.
The interview was at a Dunkin' Donuts, so I was going to go and get a White Hot Chocolate and wait until it was time. (also, scope out the interviewers.)
On entering the building, I saw someone who I worked with at Borders. I knew that she had already gotten hired by the company I was interviewing with, so I waved. The two other people at the table with her looked up. The one with the Laptop open in front of her, smiled and asked if I was their next appointment. When I said yes, she let me sit and the interview started.
The first question was a normal interview question: Why do you want to work at 2nd and Charles?
My answer was an elaboration on the fact that I miss working in a bookstore and I love books. Somewhere in my speech I mentioned that I was a the only geek at my current job.
The next question was what else was I a geek about. My answer:
“Well, right now I'm on a 'Star Trek' Kick, but that's because I'm a Karl Urban Fan girl.”
When I said Star Trek, the man sitting in the middle of the other side of the table nodded his head. With the utterance of 'Karl Urban Fan girl.', the woman with the laptop, laughed and nodded her head in a knowing matter. I think she understood. ;) I went on to explain some more things I’m a geek about.
Then the man sits up, pushes up his sleeves, and looks at me.
“Question?” he said. I nodded. “Star Trek? Kirk or Picard?”
“It depends,” I blinked at him, “TOS or AOS?”
He blinked back, “HUH? I didn't think of that. um.. for this question, we'll stick with TOS, but I like the fact that you not only differentiated, but knew the notations.”
Inside I was bouncing and squeeing! “Well, if it's just TOS, I'll have to go with Picard. I know TOS! Kirk is popular, but I don't like him, I understand the reason, too. A lot of it is based on time Period. In the late sixties, the way he acted was expected, but when I watch it, I can't escape from some my modern sensibility.” the man and the woman nodded as I spoke.“So, I know where it's coming from, I just prefer Picard.”
He nodded, smiled. “I'm Picard, too, so...”
I grinned.
They asked my former co-worker if she had any question. She shook her head no saying to was harder to come up with them when she already knew me. They asked some more usual question and I thought I did fairly well on them. Then the man asked,
“What is the one book, movie, or CD that you would pick if you had to be your only source of entertainment for the rest of time?”
“One of each or one altogether?”
“Altogether.”
“Jane Eyre! It's my favorite book!” he frowned a little,(he didn’t recognize the title) but the woman made a sound of agreement.
“Okay,” he said, “Why that book?”
I turned the next few minutes into a lecture on the merits of the book, and the good and bad parts of the movie versions. When I realized what I was doing, I blushed and stopped.
Of course the next question was “What would you say one of you worst qualities is?”
“Well, as I just demonstrated, I babble a lot.” all present laughed. “but when I’m passionate about something, I try to share that passion and try to let everyone knew why 'whatever' is so great.”
They asked a few more question that were normal, then asked some that was about my availability and the job I currently have. I started to feel good. These usually are only asked if they are going to hire you. They want to open the store by November 21. and are hiring en mass to fill all positions. Then I was told that they were going thought all the interviews today and would be calling people back no later then this afternoon.
I wasn't sure if this was a brush off or if the next interview was already there. I thanked them and left, but as I left the store, the nerves became jitters and I didn't want to drive like that. My Best Friend works in a jewelry store (it right next to where this new store is going to be) so I stopped in until I calmed down enough to drive home.
Once home, I changed out of my 'Fancy Interview' clothes and got back in the car as my brother and I had made plans to see “Wreck it Ralph”. Half way to the theater, mom calls Brother's cell.
2nd and Charles called, and wanted me to return the call. She gave me him the number and I called as soon a we parked. If you're reading this, you might have seen my sticky post about having Social anxiety. It was already going crazy from the interview, so when I returned the call, and it went to voice mail, I panicked.
I babbled, saying that I was returning the call and left my home number. And that I would be there around 3:30 as I was going into the movies right then, and I was on my brother's cell and hey, what's the number to your cell, um well he doesn’t know it off the top of his head. So the number I gave you is for the house. Thank you, bye.
FACEPALM! Faceplam so hard!!!!!!!
We bought the tickets and I paced while he got snacks. He handed me his phone and said he looked up the number. I called back and left it with them. I sat through the pre-commercials and the previews (Les Misérables and Rise of the Guardians!) fretting. I started to relax when the movie started, thinking that at that point the was nothing I could do. There was a short animation before the movie and I couldn't help cast Jim and Bones in it when the couple got together. (yes, I need help!)
Then in the middle of the movie, my brother's cell, which I was still clutching, vibrated. I ran out of the theater and answered it. It was 2nd and Charles and I had got the job!!!!! he talked about paperwork and so forth and I hung up. Took a deep breath and jumped around the empty hall for a few seconds mouthing “I got it, I got it!”
I've been on cloud nine since then and it was made even better when I got home and there was an announcement for Word Wars!
And that was my day.
I'm happy!
