"I'm sooo bored," Zelo complained, flopped boneless atop a craggy rock. "There's nothing to do here."

"How many years are you sitting on?" Himchan asked him, fiddling with a violin. Himchan asked these things. He was the type to be personally invested in ensuring no Reaper he knew died of laziness.

Zelo hummed, watching Himchan work with little interest. "Like, a hundred-eighty-four? I'm set 'til next-next century."

"Diligent," Himchan said, approving.

"Yeah, well there was nothing else to do," Zelo frowned. "And now I've literally got nothing else to do."

"Want something interesting?" Himchan offered, turning the violin bow over in his hands. Horse hair from human world horses and not even fireproof. Zelo didn't really see the point. He gave Himchan a dubious look.

Himchan's standards of 'interesting' varied from stalking odd human souls to smuggling actual human artefacts down into Hell. Like the violin. There were guitars too-a whole collection of fancy ones from rockstars Himchan had ended over the last few decades, and Zelo wasn't sure how he kept all the wood from rotting. "What have you got?"

Glanced surreptitiously around, Himchan gave Zelo his best manic grin.

Zelo rolled his eyes. If Himchan expected Zelo to scream like a human girl…

Himchan pouted, deprived of a reaction. "Fine," he said, "Be like that," and presented Zelo with a second Death Note.

Zelo's eyes went round. "Whoa, wait… another one? How did you get two?"

"Trade secrets," Himchan said smugly, patting the Death Note still secured to his own black leather belt. "I tricked the King out of it. Want it to play with?"

Zelo stared at Himchan and the Death Note in his hands. "Could I? Really?"

"Yeah, if you like," Himchan said and shrugged, holding the book out. "It's of no particular use to me. I just thought it would be funny to have."

Zelo turned the black-bound book over in his hands as the gears turned in his head. "…if I bring it to the human world…"

Himchan glanced back up from his violin, an unholy glee in his eyes. "And drop it there? Let someone see you?"

"Yeah," Zelo said, blinking. "I mean, there's some pretty interesting humans out there. Maybe I'll get lucky."

"Interesting," Himchan grinned. "Very interesting."

Zelo grinned back. "It could be, right?"

Jongup pulled his shoelaces tight and-regarded the black book on the floor. Strange. It hadn't been there a moment ago. If it had, he would have stepped on it.

Reaching out, he picked it up. White English letters on the front… a whole bunch more English on the inside cover. Jongup frowned. He sucked at English. He couldn't even tell which part was the person's name.

Standing up with the book, he turned around to go back the way he came and nearly walked face-first into a really tall, pale person-

"Sorry," Jongup said on auto.

"Hi," said the person.

Jongup stared at him. He was really tall, and really pale, all white and what looked like bones sticking out from his arms and chest. Kind of like an armoured mummy. Weirdo. "Um," said Jongup.

"My name's Zelo," the tall person said. "I'm a Reaper."

"…riiight," Jongup said, and eyed Zelo's odd-shaped wings. It didn't look like they'd be able to fit through a doorway, but what did Jongup know about wings.

"…um. A god of death?" Zelo tried. "Shinigami? Jeoseung-Saja?"

"You got off the train too early," Jongup decided, pointing vaguely north. "The anime convention is at the hall three stops down that way. This place is a school."

"Uh," Zelo said. "I know, I just…"

"Did you want me to take you?" Jongup asked. "I was actually heading there with a couple of my friends for the Pokémon tournament, so…"

Zelo blinked, seemingly confused. Jongup wondered if he was a foreigner or something. But he didn't look like it-as much as he looked like anything on Earth-and his Korean was good.

"…uh. Come with me if you want," Jongup said, skirting Zelo and his wingspan to make his way down the hall. "Otherwise you should probably leave first if you don't have a visitor's pass from the office."

After a moment, Zelo turned to follow him.

"Wait, is this yours?" Jongup asked, holding out the little black book in his hands. What if all Zelo wanted was his book back.

But Zelo shook his head. "Nope, it's yours now."

Jongup gave him a strange look. "Uh. No, it's not?"

"Where are you going with it then?" Zelo asked.

Jongup gave him an even stranger look. "To lost property… it's next to the office if you want a visitor's pass."

"Oh," Zelo said. He looked disappointed. What a weirdo.

"Are you coming?" Jongup asked him.

Zelo blinked. "…uh, sure."

Nobody died.

Himchan laughed his ass off. "What kind of Reaper are you, losing to a human? You've been alive this long and can't even kill by proxy…?"

"Shut up!" Zelo frowned, more annoyed by Himchan's teasing than Jongup's… condition, or anything else. "I tried explaining it to him but he just thought I was crazy. So lame."

It hadn't been all wasted time in the human world though. Jongup had been really interesting and really good at that 'Pokémon' game, and after the tournament they'd hung out at Jongup's house and Jongup's mother hadn't even been concerned that Jongup had been having conversations with apparent thin air the whole time because she couldn't see Zelo, but apparently Jongup was just that weird.

And now Zelo had smuggled down to Hell a skateboard that Jongup's oldest brother had outgrown. Zelo didn't understand how humans moved beyond thing after thing so quickly, but whatever. He could probably burn maybe a decade or two learning tricks on the board, which was better than just playing the same old card and knuckle games with the rest of the stupid, aimless Reapers around.

"Did you bring it back?" Himchan asked.

"What?" Zelo blinked. He'd brought back the skateboard… that was about it.

Himchan frowned. "The second Death Note, you dummy. Where is it!"

"Oh," Zelo said. That? That was still in Jongup's school's lost property bin. He gave a sheepish grin. "Oops. Time for another trip to the human world, I guess…"
