Anais Nin was a daring woman.

My best two girlfriends were both martial artists. They compelled their own strength and made those demands of themselves, so I never had reason to doubt them.

Quotes, lyrics, and poems are interesting. They are not a dialog, so you are left to fill in some blanks and interpret.

"When livin' gets heavy
And hope starts to fade
You just can't continue
That old masquerade
Remember the power that comes from above
When push comes to shove
Thank God for self love"

So Van Morrison says to both rely on God (a higher power of some kind), yet rely on yourself as well. Maybe he's saying you're asking for a power-up?
