It's Never Happened Before, Except Once

Many Britons have an aversion to subtitles. I've yet to decide whether this is because of foreign language films having a (unfounded) reputation in the UK for being 'poncy' or, more likely, because of sheer laziness. Regardless, Channel 4's purchase of the rights to air Les Revenants (The Returned, for non-French speakers), a subtitled drama, was ( Read more... )

Saw it in French a few months ago. A case of style over substance IMO. It's all very polished, well paced and atmospheric but it didn't really make a whole lot of sense. The soundtrack is dead creepy though. I too worry it will end up being another Lost: an exercise in futility ( ... )

I just wish producers/writers/actors etc. would refuse to sell out more. If they have x number of episodes plotted out, stick to it; don't feel the need to pander to financial pressure and hastily add another eight, twelve, twenty-something episodes to wring another season out of it. That said, Les Revenants is supposedly based on a French film of the same name - but known in English as They Came Back - so maybe there is an ending in mind. Again, however, reviews of the film say it 'suffers from long-winded earnestness ( ... )

I didn't watch Broadchurch and I haven't seen either version of Life on Mars so I can't comment on those. I think it's a general aversion to America - because it is inevitably America who remakes everything - thinking that they can do it better, or that their audiences need a show to be set in America, with 'beautiful' American actors.

Wrong.

I loved season one of the Danish version of The Killing - I fully intend to watch season two when my rental company decides to deliver it - and I was so annoyed when I saw that America had remade it, had ripped it from Denmark to Seattle, had changed the names of the characters to make them more American, but had used the same plot. Disgraceful.

Then again, the UK and France is guilty of 'stealing' The Bridge from Denmark and Sweden in making The Tunnel. Why can't people have ideas of their own anymore?
