I'm stealing mixmaster_morty 's idea, and making a list of notable albums which I heard for the first time in 2008.

Brother Ali - Undisputed Truth
Feel-good hip hop. My new exercise music.

Drive-By Truckers - Southern Rock Opera
A concept album about Lynyrd Skynyrd. Really, it's about the songwriters' relationship and history with the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and it' ( Read more... )

- Brother Ali is pretty under-rated. And he seems up your alley with all the blues samples and his laid back (but somehow often angry) flow. Oh and then you realize he's albino.

- I'm not sure if I'll ever get into either Drive By Truckers or Grateful Dead. But Ryan Adams did have this great quote about the latter, "I don't care what anyone says, the Dead were punk as fuck. Pirates! Wildmen! Kicking out tons of albums without any mainstream cred and they were peakin' hard in '77."

- One day I may finally listen to the Kinks. But I think the problem with them may be that their songs and style have become so incorporated into all this other stuff that you forget how it must have sounded like back then. Hmm, so it goes.

- Does Sam Cooke run around on stage for four hours wearing bandanas?

- Do you like other native tongues hip hop stuff? Because I think you'd also like De La Soul in addition to Tribe.

- UP JUMPED THE DEVIL NOW HERE WE GO!

In general, the appeal of the Grateful Dead eludes me. To me, it sounds like not everyone in the band is playing - a little too thin sounding. But a couple of the melodies on this album are so pretty that they get under your skin. I pretty much never want to hear them jam, though.

I'm surprised about the Drive-By Truckers, though. Is it because of the southern twang? That turns a lot of people off.

I have the same problem with The Kinks. Plus, their music is often so simple, it doesn't make for good headphone music, which is mainly how I listen to music these days.

People tell me I'd like De La Soul. I definitely need to check them out. I'm pretty hip-hop-ignorant. I have a few people I know pretty well, and a lot of names which I hear about all the time but who I"ve never listened to.
