Reasons it's okay to be me today

1. I went skating again last night. My goal was to fall less than five times; I didn't fall once (though Lord knows, I came close). What really helped was when one of the rollergirls suggested that I undo the top two laceholes of my very stiff rental skate boots, which finally allowed me to bend my knees, which is what I really needed. By the end ( Read more... )

1. Heh, y'know, I've been thinking you were talking about ice skating.
2. The second time you do an activity that made you sore, you'll get much less sore, even if you work harder. This is because your nervous system adapts to new activity much more quickly than your muscles; the first time you did it, your neurons were firing every which way, and not activating things anywhere near as efficiently as it does the second time. The stretching and the increased freedom of movement probably helped as well.
Not that you asked.
3. Is there, or will the be, an online version to which you can provide a link? I enjoy your writing, so if you're proud of it, I definitely want to see it.

On an unrelated note, I don't know if you ever read my LJ or not, but in case you don't: on most Sundays I play host for movie(s) and dinner. whiskey_poptart usually comes up, and sometimes other folks as well. Just so you know you have a standing invitation. This week is the return of Cincinnati chili.

Aw, thanks for the invite, but it's hard for me to leave town due to various work/social/dog-related obligations. That's why I'm so excited about going to Philly.

Ha, no, roller skating is ALL the rage down here in Charm City right now. And no link as our website is currently effed the eff up, sadly.

I think once I get my skates off the floor I'm going to start hurting again, but less from the bruising and more because I'm getting a good workout. Which will be worth it!

500 mg of vitamin C before exercise has been shown to reduce Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness by up to 50%. A typical glass of OJ has less than 100mg, so you might want to consider picking up a supplement. Or just do what I do and take pride in your limping :-D Also, DOMS takes about 36 hours to peak, so you may still have some soreness in store for you today. Yes, I used to run a GNC. Does it show?

or just take an ice bath after exercising. Torture for 5-7 minutes but no muscle soreness at all after! (Granted I can only force myself to do it when I've done some SERIOUS workout, like the 1/2 marathon)

Yeah -- you seemed to have made really good progress last night -- kudos!

In contrast, I fell down several times last night, because I am trying to learn how to turn backwards at higher speeds, and also turn back frontwards when skating backwards. There's always something else you don't know how to do yet . . .

Falling is learning! At least that's what I tell myself...

I envy your resilience.

No, I don't either.

I wish I envied your resilience, but I'm a lazy bastard who's less fond of pain with each passing year and I am what I am.

Hooray on all counts! Especially #6, though. The most important thing is that you be healthy, and it sounds like the things you've been doing are getting you there. Right on!

Yeah, it's nice to be able to sleep through the night again. I miss my good friend Beer, but it's definitely worth it to be able to pal around with my other buddies Solid Food and Eight Hours Of Sleep again.

My main fancy move is the Not Falling. It's still a work in progress, but I like it better than my old trick, Falling On My Ass Repeatedly Until I Achieve a Bruise the Size of Kentuck On My Backside. Easier to type, for one thing.
