The unfair we knew about, but this is seriously unbalanced.

Dear Fox News,

Stop it. Stop it stop it stop it. Please. My profession has enough difficulty getting respect as it is.

At the very least, please change your name to the Weekly World Fox News and include poorly photoshopped pictures of Bigfoot in your regular coverage. That way people will know what they're in for.

Sincerely,

Ann Editor

Amen. Also, I've have enough of the sentence "Cho was reportedly taking anti-depressants." As if that explains everything. "Oh, he was taking anti-depressants. No wonder he did this!"

Jesus. I'm taking anti-depressants. And I have no secret cache of weapons, no videotape of myself brandishing a hammer in a menacing fashion, no written manifestos (other than the one I'm writing about how if Lane Bryant is going to label their jeans "low-rise" they have to actually lower the rise), no nefarious plans whatsoever.

"Taking anti-depressants" should not be shorthand for "sociopath in waiting."

I heard an interesting op-ed on NPR yesterday about how other countries' media were making a big deal out of the fact that he was Korean--actual headlines in major papers read stuff like, "VT KILLER WAS A KOREAN," like that was the major news. The commentator made the point that these papers obviously didn't understand America, that the guy came here at age 8, and that they were focusing on what was essentially a non-issue (or at least a pretty minor one in the grand scheme of things). One line he said was something like, "Cho killed more than 30 people, including himself. That makes him representative of no group." That's kind of how I feel about the depressive thing. Like, yeah, the guy was obviously fucked up... because he shot and killed over 30 people. You don't really have to go looking further than that for evidence that he was way outside any norm. The only group he possibly could be considered representative of is... mass murderers. Or, evidently, the satanically possessed.

Also, don't sell yourself short: I would argue that certain shades of lipstick you own could well qualify as some form of weapon.

Word. And also puke. We've all done our fair share of bullshitting to fill space in our day, but yeesh. Fox News, why the hell are you even going to anyone from Oral Roberts for quotes?

Yeah, I realize it's a "viewpoint" piece and not, uh, straight news, but still. It reads like something from the frickin' Onion.
