the perfect city?

I have to say SF doesn't feel that way to me at all, as a person who grew up there. For me, San Francisco is not an escape, but it have a sense of place. But that is probably because it is my home. Though I also love Los Angeles...even if the Dodgers are there! :)

I'm NOT leaving LA. I like LA. I am rooted here. But I've got SF roots that go back farther, and I need to start exploring them as well. I don't know why I can't have my cake and eat it too. I've been wanting to split my life between these two cities for a while, and now I have some very compelling reasons to stay in LA, but also have this philosophy of carpe diem. I never thought it was feasible to live between two cities. I mean, it's just crazy to think that, or that I could pull it off. Far crazier than oh, I don't know, changing your gender.... (sarcasm).

Besides, I've got some very important friends in LA that I am not willing to give up ;)

Good post.
I think places that exist as escapes from other places don't really work. Value is created by people taking root somewhere.I think you've hit on a really good point. For me, though, I find LA to be a really hard place to take root - the necessity of owning a car, the far-flung distribution of one's circle of friends, the scarcity of walkable neighborhoods, the cost of living. It all means I find it hard to really live according to my values here ( ... )
