There's nothing new under the sun

So, you guys know how I posted last month about how I was going to be devoting myself to working on my original novel? Well, I'm happy to say that I have been doing exactly that. I've set myself a goal of 1000 words a day, which I know is not that much to some of you, but it's a lot for me, and seems to be just about right. It's enough that I'm ( Read more... )

The only comforting things I can manage at the moment are:

Lizzie Bennet Diaries is making regency super super hot at the moment, so 60k+ words = you being ahead of a lot of the pack.

Upstairs Downstairs also made a revival alongside Downton Abbey, and the two existed quite comfortably for a while, so there's clearly room for double audiences even on things which are creepy similar.

Any USP (unique selling point) which can potentially sell like "ooh this is an excellent twist" is what publishers look out for, especially if it's on trend, so stick with your unique outlook and your unique voice and go go go go go. <3

You should definitely persevere! I think there's room for pretty much infinite modern retellings of Austen's works. Bridget Jones' Diary and Bride & Prejudice don't in any way detract from one another even though they're telling the same story. And then of course there's Clueless, which does the same thing for Emma.

LBD is so driven by its vlog format that I think there's still lots of territory left to cover. Don't lose heart, it's such a classic story that, like Shakespeare, there's always something new that can be done with it.

At one point I had this idea that I was going to write an adaptation of P&P set in the American South in the 1930s, but then I got over that pretty quickly once I actually started trying to write it. ;)
