It's that time of the decade to buy a new PC. Intel processors have bred like rabbits and now have completely meaningless names.
Since I'll be playing games, doing some Photoshop and MS office stuff on this PC should I go for a quad core Q6600 running at 2.4ghz or a dual core E6850 running at 3ghz?
Opinions?

I'm inching towards a multi-core system now. The physics in the new games is stomping all over my multi-cpu system. From what I've read, the programmers are getting better at handling all the pipelines now, so you should see a longer game-lifespan for a quad 2.4 over a dual 3.
Then again, the whole paradigm shifted six months after I got the quad CPU behemoth. It's now performing as a very good mid-range box. By next year (ie, two months) it'll be entry level, then "This is just for photoshop", and then "This is Zoe's machine."
