This is how exciting my life has become. I've spent today cleaning my room and organizing my bills. 5 cigarettes were smoked during this process. Currently, a beer is sitting beside me on my nicely organized desk

Try using Potrait of the Young Artist as a precursor to Ulysses. That's how it clicked for me, rereading one and then immediatly having (yet another) go at the other. Once I'd read Ulysesses a couple times, Finnegan's followed reasonably easily. Check out Becket's Dreams of Fair to Middling Women too.

Whether writing well needs understanding Joyce is a different debate. :-)

Well, I agree that you don't need to understand Joyce in order to write well. I just want to be able to use the english language as artfully as he. The way he just bends and flexes it to his will is amazing to me.
