We're going to have a lesson today.

Today's topic is: Australian Lingo.

For those of you who don't know, I was born in Australia, as was my mum, so we both know the slang of Australia- and some commonly used words of those who live Down Under.

We'll start with the basics:

VEGEMITE: yeast spread that, despite the name, has little to no vegetable factor. it is yummy on toast or bread. often eaten with margarine spread underneath.
POTATO GEMS: alternately american TATER TOTS.
COLES: like vons or ralphs, is the standard supermarket/grocery store. they sell everything from aussie-grown apples to ...something that starts with z. alternately, this definition could also apply to SAFEWAY.
MEAT PIE: a pie, much like a shepherd's pie, that is essentially a normal pastry crust filled with savoury meat, usually beef. could also come in curry, vegetable, vegetarian, or gluten-free types, among others.
SHEILA: girl, female. i.e. SHEILA COP.
TELLY: comparable to the british english 'TELLY'; television. australian television has five main channels: sbs 1, channel 7, nine, channel ten, and abc.
FOOTY: not to be confused with the american FOOTBALL; a sporting term that often includes the sport RUGBY. FOOTY is a sport that includes tackling, an oblong yet ovular ball with lace grips, and men in long-sleeved shirts. popular teams include ESSENDON and the BOMBERS.
MOZZIE: mosquito. often appear year-round. cause red bites that go away on their own after a little over a week.

And moving on:

KERB: australian phonetic spelling alternate of the american CURB.
GOLDEN SYRUP: a syrup that is golden. a consistency of that of honey, but a taste comparable to both molasses and maple syrup. often eaten as a spread on toast, sandwiches, or with VEGEMITE. an ingredient in the classic ANZAC BISCUIT.
ANZAC BISCUITS: biscuits/cookies made with GOLDEN SYRUP. often cooked until golden brown and crackly; a native food to australia. can be bought at any australian standard supermarket.
TIM TAMS: chocolate biscuits with chocolate cream covered in chocolate. available in dark, milk, and jam flavours.
DICKO: a judge on australian idol. often compared to SIMON COWELL. a music producer, so sometimes also compared to RANDY JACKSON, depending on his comments in the duration of the show.
CRICKET: the sport of choice of those australians who do not watch FOOTY. a complicated game much like baseball involving a flat bat, gloves, leg padding, and an intricate way of pitching the ball that looks somewhat like a bowling-move combined with a windmill.
BROADY: an affectionate name for the community of BROADMEADOWS. often, jokes are made concerning the safety and criminal records of those who live in this community.
YOBBO: classless, obnoxious. often used in context with rowdy guys in a pub.
FAIR DINKUM: the truth. comparable to american 'HONEST TO GOD'/'BLOG'.
HOYTS: a cinema, comparable to the american AMC. often found in shopping centres such as HIGHPOINT and BROADMEADOWS SHOPPING CENTRE.

If there's anything I missed, comment and I'm likely to explain in a reply or, if prominent enough, will add it to this list.

Thanks, love you.
