In general, I agree. Mainly because I would like to think I'm smart (or dumb!) enough to know what I want to do with/put into my body (and in coordination with consenting adults). Does that make me a libertarian? I'm not sure how these things work.
The devil on my shoulder tends to say things like "Humanity can't be trusted and so there needs to be order. Thus, certain drugs, however they're defined, should be restricted somehow. Made illegal? All of them? Only the proven addictive ones?"
Anecdotal->point: I think I'm addicted to "X", but it's not illegal. Maybe my shaking hands grip the wheel too tight, anxiety and adrenaline mixed, running through my body. It causes me to get into an accident, taking someone else's life. Maybe this happens to a lot of people who take "X". Is it the governing body's to do something about it? Dunno.
I whole heartedly agree with your stance on drug legalization. I don't believe the government has the right to tell me what I can or cannot do with my own body. This is also the reason why I was completely against the NYC trans fat ban, despite my enjoyment of healthier foods over those containing icky stuff
( ... )
I agree with everything you said. Especially regarding the financial benefit - it's a double benefit: less money wasted on the "drug war" and prisons and more money brought in via taxes. Now if our politicians would stop being afraid of the "think of the children" crowd and get a move on we might see some results!
I heartily agree! While we're at it, maybe legalize prostitution as well. Tax it, regulate it and make even more money. (and no, I am not being facetious)
Buuut, as we all know the religious wrong has such a hold on this country that it will never happen.
It was really interesting to see the attempted (and sadly failed) legalization of prostitution in San Francisco this past election. There had been so much hub-ub about how prostitutes had already infiltrated certain neighborhoods and that legalization would just encourage more prostitutes and pimps to come into the area
its a shame that not enough people took into account how much safer it would be for all involved if prostitution were to be legalized and regulated.

If we did it based on # of accidents/fatalities (for example), alcohol would be suuuuuuuper illegal.
